Showtime has canceled The First Lady after one season. Created by Aaron Cooley and consisting of 10 episodes, the drama told interconnected stories of former first ladies and boasted a star-studded cast. Viola Davis played Michelle Obama, while Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson portrayed Betty Ford and Eleanor Roosevelt. The ensemble also included Kiefer Sutherland, O-T Fagbenle, Aaron Eckhart, Dakota Fanning, Lily Rabe, and others.

EW has now confirmed that The First Lady season 2 will not be happening. In a statement, a spokesperson for Showtime thanked the cast and crew for their efforts in telling the stories of Obama, Ford, and Roosevelt. Despite the fact that The First Lady completed the examination of its trio by the end of its run, there had been discussions of what a second season might look like.

In previous remarks, while promoting the series, executive producers Cathy Schulman and Susanne Bier talked about the possibility of future seasons which would center around the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Hillary Clinton, and Melania Trump. There was the hope that, if the initial outing was a success, the show might then be able to examine a wide range of first ladies and the people that impacted their lives.

The First Lady struggled from the jump, however, with multiple reviews expressing how the series often unfolded like a well-acted Wikipedia summary rather than an engrossing example of episodic television. The anthology was likewise hampered by criticisms of Davis’ performance as Michelle Obama, which Davis responded to in comments of her own. Overall, due to a lack of buzz, and with no major nominations at the Emmys, the series’ trajectory was cut short.
