The Gifted's series premiere is now available for free on Itunes. When it comes to sheer variety of available options, there has never been a better time to be a fan of watching superheroes on the small screen. Just some of the shows out there include Gotham, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Legion, The CW's Arrow-verse, and Netflix's Defenders-verse, and new players are joining the landscape of TV superheroes seemingly all the time. One recent addition to said landscape is FOX's The Gifted, created by Matt Nix.

Set in a dark alternate timeline in which the X-Men have disappeared, The Gifted stars Stephen Moyer (True Blood) and Amy Acker (Person of Interest) as Reed and Caitlin Strucker, respectively. The Struckers are forced to take their family on the run after discovering that their children have manifested mutant abilities, and end up seeking help from an underground society of persecuted mutants in order to survive.

The Gifted's series premiere episode - which was directed by X-Men movie mainstay Bryan Singer - aired this past Monday, and reactions to the show from both fans and critics have been quite positive so far. Episode two airs this coming Monday, but for those who've yet to check out the premiere and want to catch up, Itunes has made The Gifted's debut episode available for free. Also available are two short featurettes that offer a closer look at the series as a whole.

Season 1 of The Gifted consists of 10 episodes, and airs immediately following Lucifer on Mondays. This creates the unprecedented situation of a DC-based series and a Marvel-based series airing back to back on the same network. Both shows' premieres did fairly well in the ratings too, so one wonders how long this odd cross-company combo will continue going forward.

One assumes Marvel is quite pleased with the positive responses to The Gifted so far, especially after the largely negative reviews received by ABC's fellow recently debuted Marvel series Inhumans. While the jury is still out on whether or not Inhumans can recover creatively as it goes along, The Gifted seems to be excelling right out of the gate, and proving - along with Legion - just how well the X-Men world can be adapted to fit live-action TV.

The Gifted season 1 airs Mondays at 9pm on FOX.
