Firewatch, the critically acclaimed 2016 video game, is getting a feature film adaptation courtesy of Snoot Entertainment. The production company will team up with game developer Campo Santo to bring Firewatch to the big screen. Firewatch received rave reviews upon its release in 2016 and ended up selling a million copies within the first year of its release.

Campo Santo's Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin will produce the film, along with Snoot's Keith Calder and Jess Wu Calder. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Calder said, “Firewatch is a stunning accomplishment, a beautiful and heartbreaking piece of art. I’m delighted that Sean and Jake are letting us ruin their perfect video game by turning it into a movie and/or TV show.” Vanaman followed up by saying, “Jess and Keith are hard-working and visionary film producers with impeccable taste in video games.

This isn't the first time reports of a Firewatch film have circulated. In late 2016, it was reported that Good Universe was working on an adaptation, but the project never got off the ground, and the company lost the film rights after it was sold to Lionsgate. Campo Santo then connected with Snoot Entertainment, leading to the current project. The production company has built a roster of well-received indie films, including Blindspotting and Little Monsters. Video game movies have a reputation for being poorly received, but given Firewatch's impressive narrative, this video game adaptation has a real chance at succeeding.

Firewatch follows Henry (voiced by Rich Sommer), a fire lookout in the Wisconsin wilderness, as he investigates strange occurrences and reports back to his supervisor, Delilah (voiced by Cissy Jones). They communicate exclusively via handheld radio as they watch over different sections of the park. During the summer of 1989, Henry and Delilah contend with the loneliness and isolation of the job while getting to know each other over the radio.
