The September PREVIEWS catalog will offer Browncoats everywhere their first look at the first issue of the upcoming Firefly comic book. The new monthly series, which is being published by BOOM! Studios, was first announced back in July and is scheduled to arrive in comic shops in November.

The original Firefly television series was short-lived but spawned one of the most devout fandoms in existence. Created by Joss Whedon, the series was set 500 years in the future, in a new solar system terraformed by humanity. The show focused upon the crew of a ship called Serenity and the odd jobs of varying levels of legality that they undertook under the nose of a fascist government known as the Alliance. Firefly was notable for a unique aesthetic that was more heavily influenced by Westerns than traditional science fiction and inspired a feature-length film, Serenity, which closed out most of the original series' subplots.

PREVIEWSworld announced the Firefly preview in an official press release regarding the latest issue of their monthly catalog. The new catalog (and the preview) should be available in comic shops everywhere on August 29.

Details on the new Firefly series have been surprisingly scarce, beyond the first story arc being set before the events of the television series and showing how Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds and his future first-mate Zoe first met during the War of Unification. It is unknown if future story arcs will jump around the timeline established by the original series and Serenity or be set concurrent within the original series. It is also unknown if the series will continue the story of the various Serenity mini-series published by Dark Horse Comics or if those stories will be counted as cannon. Either way, BOOM! Studios will be reprinting the Dark Horse Comics' Firefly and Serenity stories in a series of new Legacy Edition collections, the first of which will be released on the same day as Firefly #1.

It is known that Joss Whedon will be serving as a creative consultant on the new monthly comic book. The creative team will be made up of writer Greg Pak (best known for his work with The Incredible Hulk and Superman) and artist Dan McDaid (Judge Dredd: Mega City Zero, Doctor Who Magazine). The first issue will feature a main cover by Lee Garbett (Judge Dredd, Batgirl) and variant covers by Jock (Detective Comics, The Losers), J.G. Jones (Final Crisis, Wanted), Bill Sienkiewicz (Daredevil, Judge Dredd) and Joe Quinones (America, Howard The Duck).
