Mega Evolution has finally made it to Pokémon GO. This gameplay feature was interested in the sixth generation Pokémon games and allows certain Pokémon to temporarily obtain powerful new forms during battle. After a shine of light, Mega Evolved Pokémon gain a buffed-up appearance, improved stats, and a new ability. As one would expect, this greatly enhances a Pokémon’s combat potential and can give their trainer the edge in battle.

This summer, Mega Evolution has been introduced to Pokémon GO, allowing players to enhance certain Pokémon for battling raids, gyms, friends, and Team Rocket. Unlike in the main series games, Pokémon Mega Evolve differently in Pokémon GO. In this game, they use Mega Energy, a unique resource. Currently, the only known Pokémon that can Mega Evolve in Pokémon GO are Venusaur, Blastoise, Charizard, and Beedrill. Much like with shiny Pokémon, more will be periodically released in the future. This guide will take a look at where to find Mega Energy in Pokémon GO, and how to use it.

As of now, there are 2 methods to obtain Mega Energy. The primary source for them is Mega Raids, a new variation of raid battles that feature Mega Evolved Pokémon as the opponent. Players partake in these raids no differently than regular raids, so look for local Pokémon Gyms to see if a Mega Raid is currently underway. Completing these special raids will net players the Mega Energy of whatever Pokémon they just fought. Players are rewarded with more Energy the faster they beat the Raid Boss, so be sure to take down the boss as quickly as possible. Mega Energy can also be obtained by completing Professor Willow’s latest research project, ‘A Mega Discovery’. Completing the various tasks, which include basic objectives like catching Pokémon and sending gifts to friends, will net 200 Mega Beedrill Energy. It's possible that there will be more research events in the future that grant Mega Energy, so don't lose hope.

Once someone has collected enough Mega Energy for a specific Pokémon, they can Mega Evolve them for a duration of time. The amount of Mega Energy required varies depending on the species of Pokémon, so keep that in mind. The button to activate Mega Evolution is located underneath the Power-Up option on the Pokémon’s summary page. Once pressed, the designated Pokémon will remain in it’s Mega Evolved for an hour before reverting back. Those that plan on playing Pokémon GO for a while on a long walk or hike will want to Mega Evolve their Pokémon during that time to make the most out of these temporary surges in strength. After a Pokémon has Mega Evolved for the first time, they can do so again in the future for a reduced Mega Energy cost.
