In the new Naturalist update for Red Dead Online, players choose whether to track down wild and Legendary animals for study or sport. In this new role, players can purchase a map and animal field guide from a new NPC, Harriet Davenport. From there, they can choose to help her study and conserve the wildlife of the Old West. She will award Naturalist XP for players finding, sedating, tagging, and taking a sample from the animal and bringing it back to her. At the same time, players can start working with Harriet but choose to simply kill the animals instead and trade their pelts to Gus MacMillan, another new NPC who can give the player specialty garments and items for their troubles.

As part of the Naturalist role, players will have the chance to track down Legendary animals. These are large, more specialized creatures players can begin cataloging after reaching level 5 in the role. There are currently 30 Legendary animals to find and tag, most of which players are sent to find on missions from working with Harriet. There will likely be more added in future updates. One of the most recent additions is the Legendary Mud Runner Buck. This creature can only be found in Free Roam mode, and finding it can either net the player some XP to progress the role or the Legendary Mud Runner Coat, depending on which NPC the player works for. Here's how to find it.

Find the Legendary Mud Runner Buck in Red Dead Online

Red Dead Online Legendary Mud Runner Buck Map Location

The Legendary Mud Runner Buck is a piebald deer. It usually spawns between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. in clear weather during Free Roam. Players will typically find it in the southern region of The Heartlands near Flat Iron Lake east of Flatneck Station.

This buck does have massive antlers, which it will use to charge the player if it feels threatened. Players will need to watch out as they track it.

To update the Field Guide, players need to track, sedate, study, take a sample, and take a photo of the Legendary Animal. There is also a section in the guide that asks players to kill one of the creatures and skin it for its pelt. The game currently does not allow players to both take a sample and skin the same creature, so players wanting to fully complete the guide will need to find two of the Legendary Mud Runner Bucks. It helps if players start with the sedating and sampling to earn XP from Harriet.

Players should avoid killing the Legendary Animals they have already sedated, as that tends to upset Harriet, and if the player makes her mad enough, she will not deal with them for a little while, making it harder to progress in the Naturalist role.
