Games in the Fallout series are known for the terrifyingly irradiated enemies players must face in the wasteland. Even though Fallout 76 is a bit different from the rest of the series, hostile mutant creatures still roam the wastes. Throughout Appalachia, players will be attacked by aggressive creatures that must be defeated. One of these mutant creatures is the Snallygaster.

Snallygasters are four-legged creatures that have sharp claws and extremely long tongues. Snallygasters use their extra limbs and tongues to overwhelm players with different types of attacks. Although Snallygasters can be defeated by a lone wastelander, it’s a smart idea to take on snallygasters in a party. Snallygasters tend to be clustered in certain locations with multiple creatures in one pack, so be prepared to fight a few snallygasters at once! Here’s how players can find and kill the snallygaster in Fallout 76.

Fallout 76: Finding & Killing Snallygasters

Before fighting snallygasters, players need to find them first. Thankfully, snallygasters are reliably found at several irradiated locations throughout the West Virginian wastes. Players should also think about gaining some mutations in these irradiated areas. Snallygasters do not always appear at their hub locations, although they can always be found at Toxic Larry’s Meat ‘n Go as well as in Charleston between the Hornwright Industrial Headquarters and the Charleston Capitol Building. The following locations do not always spawn snallygasters, but there is a chance they can be found at:

  • Pylon V-13
  • Federal Disposal Field HZ-21
  • Flooded Trainyard
  • Kiddie Corner Cabins
  • Treetops
  • The crashed vertibird behind Hemlock Holes

There are five types of snallygaster: the bloody snallygaster, the glowing snallygaster, the nascent snallygaster, the fetid snallygaster, and the scorched snallygaster. Each snallygaster has different stats, with the nascent snallygaster being the least powerful, and the glowing snallygaster being the most dangerous. The snallygasters all have the same types of abilities used during combat. It seems as if the new Steel Reign update has not affected the snallygasters' locations or abilities.

Now that players have found a snallygaster or six, it’s time to defeat them in combat. Players can expect to take a ball of toxic slime to the face, as this is the snallygaster’s ranged attack. The toxic slime ball does poison damage. Then, the snallygaster will charge the player to use a melee attack, either a scratch with its claws or a whip with its tongue. The main things to keep in mind while fighting snallygasters are their resistance to radiation damage and their headshot multiplier. Snallygasters can’t be damaged by radiation, however, headshots against them do 150% damage. Since snallygasters are quick, a good tactic against them is to headshot from a distance (preferably while hidden) followed by headshots with a close-range weapon like a shotgun when they approach the player. Make sure to loot the snallygasters, since they have useful resources that can be crafted into other items. With the right amount of backpack space, players can be confident their character will not be over-encumbered by all the loot!
