Fallout 76 takes players back to the first days after humans emerged from the vaults and reinhabited West Virginia. Throughout adventures in the Appalachian wasteland, players will encounter a variety of flora and fauna. Some of this flora and fauna are not to be trifled with due to their dangerous aggression. While some of the creatures in the wastes are easily dispatched with simple methods, others prove to be a much worse threat to players. Among these dangerous mutated foes is the Grafton Monster.

The Grafton Monster was created by West Tek in a laboratory at their Huntersville Facility. Using the snallygaster genome and a human subject, researchers grew the mutant, which promptly escaped from its containment unit. The resulting abomination is a hulking, gray monster that has a disproportionately large chest and arms, not unlike Nemesis from Resident Evil 3. The Grafton Monster has a tiny head seemingly covered by its shoulder muscles. Although it poses a significant challenge for players, the Grafton Monster can be defeated easily. Here’s how players can find and kill the Grafton Monster in Fallout 76.

Fallout 76: Finding and Killing the Grafton Monster

Finding the Grafton Monster is not a difficult task, considering there are two locations and a few events that will always feature a Grafton Monster battle. While not every spawn location will have a Grafton Monster 100% of the time, searching certain locations will give players a higher chance of encountering the behemoth. One Grafton Monster will always appear near the Charleston Trainyard as well as the dam east of the Charleston Capitol Building. The following locations may have a Grafton Monster spawned, but it is not guaranteed:

  • South of Hemlock Holes
  • The garden between Whitespring Resort and Whitespring Golf Club
  • The Toxic Dried Lakebed

Grafton monsters may also appear during the events Project Paradise, Primal Cuts, Queen of the Hunt, and The Ol’ Weston Shuffle. There are several types of Grafton Monster: Enraged Grafton Monster, Prime Grafton Monster, Parasitic Grafton Monster, Strangler Grafton Monster, Alpha Grafton Monster, and Scorched Grafton Monster. Each type of monster has different stats, with the basic Grafton Monster being the least powerful, and the Alpha Grafton Monster being the most powerful. The introduction of the new Steel Reign update does not seem to have altered any locations or events involving Grafton Monsters.

Thankfully, the Grafton monsters do not have many attacks at their disposal. The monsters are quick for their size, barreling at players in an instant. Their melee attacks can stun players for a few seconds, but they usually aren’t as dangerous as the monster’s ranged attacks. Grafton Monsters will launch an oil bomb at players, as well as throw rocks in a similar fashion to super mutant behemoths. Ranged attacks are more powerful than melee attacks for each type of monster except the Prime and Alpha Grafton Monsters.

The best way to take down a Grafton Monster is by aiming at its blowholes! There are blowholes sitting on each of the Grafton Monster’s shoulders that take 200% damage when hit. Players can use whichever methods and guns they would like to take down the Grafton Monster, but the most efficient way to defeat it is by hitting its blowholes until it perishes. Players can gain mutations that may help take down the Grafton Monster, although no special aid is needed to beat it. While not the most difficult monster to beat in Fallout 76, the Grafton Monster battles are no walk in the park!
