Each of the biomes in Valheim is home to a different one of the Forsaken, the major bosses players must summon and defeat to progress, but they are also home to an assortment of other creatures and monsters. While the Greydwarfs ruled the Black Forest and Meadows biomes, the Fulings are supreme in the Plains biome. Fulings are goblin-like creatures who live together in villages on the Plains and often attack in a small mob. Taking on multiple Fulings at once is no small feat, and players can be easily overwhelmed and killed if they aren't careful. There are several variants of Fuling, including the Fuling Shaman and Fuling Berserker. Like the Greydwarfs, each variant has a different set of abilities.

Players are in for a tough fight when they enter Fuling Villages. While it may seem safer to simply avoid these camps, it is usually the only place on the map where players can find Barley and Flax, which are very important late-game materials for sustenance and crafting. Players will also need to fight at least five Fuling Shamans in Fuling Villages on the Plains to collect Fuling Totems, which are required to summon the final boss of the Early Access version of the game, Yagluth. Fulings are also the only source of Black Metal, a crafting material used to make the strongest weapons in the game. Here's how to find Fulings and how to best go about fighting them in Valheim.

How to Find Fuling Villages in Valheim

A player finds an empty Fuling Village in the Plains biome of Valheim

While players may find some Fulings throughout the Plains biome, the most reliable way to find them is to seek out Fuling Villages. These are camplike settlements with huts made of Deer Hide. Because each player's map will be different in Valheim, it is not possible to say for certain where players will find these, but they will know one when they see it.

When a player enters a Fuling Village, they will almost immediately be attacked by any Fulings who live there. There are a few things players should do to improve their chances against these creatures.

Players should avoid venturing to the Plains biome until they have at least Iron equipment or better. While the best gear in the game is not a requirement for fighting these lower-level monsters, the better weapons and armor a player has, the better they will be able to withstand the mob.

It is always a good idea to cook and eat a hearty meal prior to venturing out for the day, and to bring enough food along for when the first meal wears off. The best food combination for the largest health pool and a decent stamina pool is Blood Pudding, Lox Meat Pie, and Serpent Stew. This will offer 250 Health, 210 Stamina, and 12 Healing per Tick.

When players happen upon a Fuling Village, it is a good idea to avoid going in right away. Instead, players should use a bow and arrows to take out as many Fulings and deathsquitos on the outskirts of the Village as they can. This way, they will have fewer enemies to fight when they enter the main camp. The Draugr Fang bow is especially useful for this task.

How to Defeat Fulings in Valheim

Once inside the Village, players are going to need to dodge the melee attacks of the smaller Fulings as well as ranged attacks from their throwing spears and torches. Fuling Berserkers are larger than the typical Fuling and will attack the player with clubs. Fuling Shamans are dangerous as well, as they will provide a buff to their allies that creates a protective barrier players will need to break through to begin dealing damage again.

Players will want to avoid being flanked if possible, so it is best to move around the perimeter of the Fuling Village and keep the mob in front of the player at all times. Players should use a sword and shield to block their attacks. They may also want to equip one of the Forsaken powers they have acquired to avoid getting overwhelmed by the mob. Movement will be imperative, and, if things get too overwhelming, players should run away from the village and pick off a few more Fulings at a time until they get their Health and Stamina back up.

Some players prefer to find a troll and bait it into following them, then set it loose against the Fulings. According to some players, trolls have the ability to defeat a few Fulings in one or two hits with their club. Then, the player can defeat the troll, which is likely to be a significantly easier fight, or let it continue to roam free.

Fulings almost always drop Coins and Black Metal Scraps. This is currently the only way for players to get Black Metal, which is needed to craft the highest-tier weaponry in the game. Fuling Shamans are nearly guaranteed to drop Fuling Totems upon being defeated. Once the Village is cleared, players can raid it for other loot, including Deer Hide, Barley, and Flax.

Players should note that Fulings will begin to spawn in the Meadows and Black Forest at night once Yagluth has been defeated. While there won't be as many of them there, it will be a good idea to avoid them by going inside at night in these two locations.
