At this point, most people are probably familiar with the mobile game Pokémon GO, even if they have not played it themselves. After all, it made $900 million in 2019, even more than when it launched in 2017. The game is still going strong in 2020, despite the pandemic. In fact, the game has added new features, such as the ability to battle in raids remotely.

One of the Pokémon that can appear in raids is Kyogre. Kyogre is a legendary water-type Pokémon and was first introduced in the third generation of Pokémon games. Its design is inspired by orcas, also known as killer whales. Fun fact: orcas are actually a species of dolphin. The Kyogre has no relation to the Zinogre, or ogres in general.

Where to find Kyogre in Pokémon GO

A Kyogre in the Pokémon anime

The only place where players can catch Kyogre in Pokémon GO is within a gym during a five-star raid. Five-star raids are the most difficult class of raids, and can only be taken on with a group. The larger the group, the better the chance of success. Most groups will probably need more than five people to win the raid, especially if the players are not max-level, and have not powered-up their Pokémon accordingly.

Luckily, there are various Pokémon groups that connect players who live near each other. There, they can coordinate to take on raids together. Many of these groups can be found on Discord, Reddit, or Facebook, as well as other platforms. It shouldn’t be hard for someone to find players nearby.

Orcas may actually be dolphins, but the Kyogre whale is a problem if players are not prepared. As Kyogre is a water-type Pokémon, it does have weaknesses to electric and grass-types. That means that Pikachu, the mascot of Pokémon, can be super effective against Kyogre. Players may want beefier Pokémon though, as the Kyogre has a lot of health.

Fighting the Kyogre is one thing, but capturing it is another matter entirely. Once it has been defeated in battle, players have a limited number of attempts to capture it, and the chance of doing so is very low. There are ways to increase the chances. First is to use razz berries, or the even better golden razz berries. Throwing curveballs also increases the chances of catching it. This is a difficult skill to master, so it might be worth practicing on more common Pokémon first. Getting an excellent throw helps increase the chances too, but it still may take several attempts. Catching it is based on luck, so it is possible to run out of the special Pokéballs and miss catching the Kyogre. In that case, the player will just have to try another raid, hopefully with better luck.
