Final Fantasy XIV patch 5.3 has newly released. Players may be clamoring towards new high-level content to acquire the best gear and new fashion. Others may be taking their time to try older features that have received recent adjustments. Dedicated Disciples of the Land may have been so swept up in 5.3’s additions, that they may have missed the myriad of rewards, like minions and mounts, are already in the game.

The Major General is a collectible minion available to the Fisher class. Instead of roaming the world of Eorzea own their own to find common fish, groups of fishermen can join together and take to the high seas of La Noscea. Through Ocean Fishing, entire alliances can gather heaps of new fish and each participant gains spoils based on their contribution.

Preparing for Ocean Fishing in Final Fantasy XIV

Ocean Fishing in Final Fantasy XIV

Players can start ocean fishing at level 1 Fisher by completing the quest All the Fish in the Sea from Fhilsnoe in Lower Limsa Lominsa X: 8, Y: 14.5. This will lead them to the skipper Dryskthota and award a free level 1 Versatile Lure. Every 15 minutes, Dryskthota will offer up voyages bound for several locations to catch exotic ocean fish. Players can take one of the 24 vacancies on the boat, or join in an 8 person party.

Fishers will be rated on the size and diversity of their catch, with each fish awarding a set number of points. Individuals who score 5,000 points will gain the Achievement No More Fish in the Sea I. With this unlocked, one can then travel to Old Gridania and claim their Major General from Jonathas at X: 10.5, Y: 6.3. Like other minions, the Major General can be used in the Gold Saucer’s Lords of Verminion matches. The Major General can act as a tank with 450 HP, 45 DEF, and the Feeding Frenzy attack with 90 Potency and can knockback.

Gear and Bait

While gaining 5,000 points is possible at low levels, players will have an easier time reaching this amount at a minimum of level 50 and wearing at least an item level 60 equipment set with high Gathering and Perception stats. This can include the craftable Forager’s armor set, and the Forager’s Fishing Rod sold by Grand Company Quatermasters for 7,500 seals. Besides the Versatile Lure, players will also want to stock up on other bait like Krill or Plump Worms, sold on the docks, and on the boat itself.

Being level 50 will also grant useful skills like Patience to increase high-quality rate but lower hook efficiency, Power Hookset that removes this penalty for strong fish (2-3 exclamations), and Precision Hookset that does the same for light fish (1 exclamation). Mooch and Snagging may also be useful on some catches.
