A new mod is adding VR support to Final Fantasy VII Remake, but players who are more susceptible to motion sickness may wish to avoid it. Ever since 2020’s hit reimagining of the beloved Final Fantasy VII was ported to PCs through the Epic Games Store last December, modders have been altering Final Fantasy VII Remake in several creative ways. These mods include recreating the 1997 original’s fixed overhead camera angle, allowing Aerith to wield a steel chair in battle as she does at the Honey Bee Inn, and even giving Cloud his outfit from the first Kingdom Hearts as an alternate costume.

There seems to be no limit to how modders can change Final Fantasy VII Remake on the PC, which might help make the wait for next year’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth a little easier. Not every Final Fantasy VII Remake mod is as cosmetic as replacing Cloud with his best friend/mentor Zack Fair or turning him into a Buster Sword-wielding version of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker either, as several of these mods add enhanced graphical features or allow players to level their characters well beyond Final Fantasy VII Remake’s Lv. 50 limit. Now, a new mod from a familiar name is adding a feature few players would think to bring to Final Fantasy VII Remake: VR support.

As reported by The Verge, noted VR modder Luke Ross recently announced a new mod for Final Fantasy VII Remake on his Patreon account - one that allows players to experience the game through a VR headset. A brief video posted by YouTuber Brian Tate a few days ago shows this Final Fantasy VII Remake VR mod in action, demonstrating how the player can look around the gritty landscape of Midgar and issue attack commands to Cloud Strife and his party. However, the view is incredibly shaky in the footage shown, and even Ross himself has admitted that his latest mod is “the ultimate VR legs tester” that will “hit [players] with the force of a speeding steel train.

Final Fantasy VII Remake VR Mod Is Not For The Faint Of Stomach

This Final Fantasy VII Remake mod is far from Luke Ross's first major gaming project, as he trades in adding VR support to existing titles every month. It has even brought him some legal trouble over the past few months, as Ross was hit with a DMCA violation over his popular VR mods for Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto V, and Mafia: Definitive Edition. While neither Patreon nor Rockstar Games publisher Take-Two Interactive specified how Ross’s mods constituted copyright infringement, he nonetheless complied with the notice and removed all references to these three games to avoid having his entire Patreon account and primary source of income shut down entirely. He is still committed to maintaining his scheduled output of one VR mod per month, with his next projected believed to be one for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered in time for its PC launch next week.

Hopefully, Luke Ross’s Final Fantasy VII Remake mod fares better than his previous ones, as FFVII’s futuristic setting of Midgar could lend itself well to a free-roaming VR experience. On the other hand, such a view could be difficult to play through given the shaky camera and Cloud’s lightning-fast movements as he slashes his way through enemies with his trusty Buster Sword. If nothing else, this Final Fantasy VII Remake VR mod could be a novel way to replay the game while waiting for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth or this year’s Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion.
