The original version of Final Fantasy VII has been added to the "Leaving Soon" section of Xbox Game PassFF7 Remake is still a PlayStation exclusive as of the time of writing, but gamers on other platforms can play a remastered version of the original game on other systems.

It was revealed at the end of 2019 that Xbox Game Pass was receiving several Final Fantasy titles. This is part of a growing relationship between Microsoft and Square Enix, which also led to other titles receiving day one launches on Game Pass, including Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition, Dragon Quest Builders 2, and Octopath Traveler. The addition of Square Enix titles has been a huge benefit to Xbox Game Pass, as it has provided a lot of lengthy JRPGs to the service.

Any game that isn't developed by a studio owned by Microsoft will only have a limited shelf life on Xbox Game Pass, and that time has come for FF7. The game has been added to the "Leaving Soon" part of Xbox Game Pass. FF7 will leave Xbox Game Pass on August 16. FF7 joined Xbox Game Pass for PC and consoles in August 2020, so it must have been a year-long deal.

FF7 isn't the only game due to leave Xbox Game Pass soon. It was previously revealed that Grand Theft Auto 5 is leaving Game Pass, after a brief three-month stint on the service. The other games that are leaving Xbox Game Pass are Darksiders: Genesis, Don't Starve, and Train Sim World, while Ape Out is leaving the PC version of Game Pass, all of which are also leaving on August 16. Xbox Game Pass is due to receive some quality titles in August, including Hades and Psychonauts 2, and fans are expecting more titles to be announced soon.

FF7 is still one of the best JRPGs of all time, and the modern remaster has several QoL improvements that make the experience a whole lot smoother. The question that fans are likely now asking themselves is when Cloud's original adventure will be replaced by his new one, as FF7 Remake Intergrade is a PS5 exclusive until the start of 2022. This seemingly updated the original exclusivity deal for FF7 Remake, as that would have ended in April, but the game has yet to appear on other platforms. The time will come when Square Enix is free to release FF7 Remake on other platforms, and when it does, there's a chance that Microsoft could snap it up as a huge title for Xbox Game Pass.
