The director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s recently hinted the third installment will share a naming theme with its processors. After a long wait, Square Enix finally revealed the second chapter in its retelling of the iconic 1997 JRPG Final Fantasy 7, which will release sometime next year on the PlayStation 5 under the name Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This altered subtitle was just as surprising as the main announcement, with many assuming the next Final Fantasy 7 Remake game would simply be named Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 before its official reveal during June's Final Fantasy 7 Anniversary Celebration livestream.

However, there may be a good reason for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s unique title, as the conclusion to 2020’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake featured a timeline-bending twist that radically altered the events of the original Final Fantasy 7. The subtitle “Rebirth” also hints certain characters who died in the old Final Fantasy 7 storyline could be resurrected during the events of the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel - with both the first game and its later INTERmission DLC teasing the surprise return of a particular fan-favorite from the larger Final Fantasy 7 universe. Whatever the reason for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s new title, it has been confirmed the still-to-come third installment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will continue a certain trend with its own name.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Tetsuya Nomura recently sat down for an interview with Dengeki Online (as translated by Comicbook.com), where he revealed the third Final Fantasy 7 Remake game will follow the naming convention established by the first two titles by having its subtitle being with an “R.” Nomura explained that while he and his team didn’t originally plan to use such a title format, they eventually decided to take this direction to foster a feeling of unification between the three Final Fantasy 7 Remake titles. In particular, Nomura wishes for the series to be shorted to “FFVIIR” in abbreviations and social media hashtags.

While many are excited for the trilogy of games, a third Final Fantasy 7 Remake was almost taken off the table, as the team at Square Enix briefly considered telling the multi-part saga in only two chapters. However, it was later decided that Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be spread between three games, and Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed the third Final Fantasy 7 Remake title is already in development.

It will probably be some time before Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix are ready to reveal the title of the third and last Final Fantasy 7 Remake entry, but at the very least fans now know to expect another subtitle starting with the letter “R.” Just as the shocking events of Final Fantasy 7 Remake sparked countless debates and endless speculation about the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, this new information will likely leave players guessing about what the concluding chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga will be called, especially once Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launches on the PS5 next year.
