The world of Valisthea in Final Fantasy XVI is made up of several nations, an uneasy peace, and primal beings called Eikons. The world, and the game's plot, seems to hinge on the concepts of Eikons and Dominants. Although Eikons, and the summons they represent, aren't entirely new to the Final Fantasy series, their relationship to human Dominants is a pretty unique spin being brought to FF16.

Thanks to a new official site dedicated to Final Fantasy 16, fans are learning all about the new world and its many interesting features. While developers at Square Enix are still keeping most plot details a secret, the way Eikons and Dominants work in FF16 was explained quite a bit. There was also official confirmation that Dominants aren't just summoners seen in games like FF10, but are humans who can actually transform into these powerful beings.

In the world of Valisthea, Eikons are the most powerful entities and typically reside inside a human carrier, called a Dominant. Eikons are a concept from Final Fantasy 14, the MMORPG that's also made by FF16 producer Naoki Yoshida's team. In FF14, these Eikons are primal gods that players must combat. In FF16, Eikons are equally powerful but give a blessing to a human. These humans who receive the Blessing of the Eikon can transform into it if they choose. This means the many nations in Valisthea use these Eikons and Dominants for a variety of purposes.

Based on the announcement trailer and new web site for Final Fantasy 16, there's quite a lot revealed about Eikons already. Some of the confirmed Eikons from the trailer include Shiva, Titan, Phoenix, and Ifrit. It's possible there's at least one other Eikon in the game, since there are five nations with a Dominant and Eikon of their own. It's also been confirmed that Joshua Rosfield, the younger brother of FF16's protagonist Clive, is Phoenix's Dominant.

Although it's unclear which nations and Dominants control which Eikons, it is confirmed that the Dhalmekian Republic controls Titan, while the Phoenix belongs to the Grand Duchy of Rosaria. While the Dominants in the Holy Empire of Sanbreque and Kingdom of Waloed are used for war, the Dominant in the Iron Kingdom is seen as an abomination and is always killed at birth. All of this sets up quite the interesting backdrop for Final Fantasy 16.

It appears more FF16 reveals won't come until 2021, but there's still plenty to get fans excited for the game. The concepts of Eikons and Dominants are pretty intriguing. It will be interesting to see how these world-building elements affect the plot of Final Fantasy 16 once the game releases.
