Final Destination 6 is happening with MCU Spider-Man director Jon Watts producing. The horror franchise Final Destination first introduced its famous Rube-Goldberg-machine-of-death gimmick way back in 2000.

That first memorable Final Destination film ultimately proved to be a big hit with horror fans, grossing $112 million at the box office. Such grosses guaranteed that the first Final Destination would not be the last, and indeed a sequel followed in 2003. 2006 saw the release of Final Destination 3, and then came 2009’s 3D effort The Final Destination, which grossed a franchise-best $186 million. Final Destination 5 arrived in 2011, and though the series’ supernatural formula still had legs as proven by the film’s $157 million box office take, another sequel has yet to come. Reports in 2020 did have Saw writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan rebooting the franchise for New Line, but that project ultimately did not come to fruition.

But indeed Final Destination has not yet reached its final destination as a movie franchise, as a sixth film in the series is now being developed by Watts of MCU Spider-Man fame along with producing partner Dianne McGunigle and New Line Cinema (via Variety). In a sign of the times the new Final Destination film is set to debut on HBO Max. Watts himself wrote the treatment for Final Destination 6 and the script is being penned by Lori Evans Taylor (Wicked Wicked Games) and Guy Busick (Scream 2022).

Alex panics on the plane

Watts revealed in a statement, “Both Dianne and I have been massive fans of ‘Final Destination’ from the very beginning.” He added. “So to be able to have a hand in crafting a new story with the original team and New Line is going to be both fun and exciting.” No doubt the huge box office for Watts’ Spider-Man: No Way Home, currently the 8th-biggest film ever worldwide with $1.53 billion taken and counting, helped clear the way for the director to get his dream horror project made.

Indeed horror revivals have been big in recent years. Currently, the venerable Scream franchise is now back in the form of a legacy sequel and reviews are very positive. Obviously the new Halloween movies have proven that Michael Myers can still put a fright in audiences as well. Not all horror revivals turn out so successful however, as proven by the recent Spiral: From the Book of Saw, which disappointed critics and fans. Hopefully Watts’ Final Destination 6 is able to recapture the magic of the original films, which carved out a special place in horror lore through the use of engaging actors, supernatural storytelling and intricately clever kills.
