With the latest announcements out of the Final Fantasy XIV fanfest about Shadowbringers, the expansion's new races and more, it looks like FFXIV director Naoki Yoshida isn't showing any signs of slowing down. He has now revealed in an interview with Gamespot that he has ideas for a FFXIV battle royale game, which sounds like an intriguing thought.

Yoshida has spent the past 6 years working on FFXIV, both as the producer and the director, under the watchful eye of Square Enix. While the company has yet to branch out into the vein of games like Fortnite, the recent success of titles like Apex Legends and the gamble taken by the Titanfall developers looks like it's prompted Yoshida to think about on the potential behind a FFXIV battle royale title.

In an interview with Gamespot where he was asked about future projects that he would like to work on, Yoshida noted that he would like to "take on the battle royale genre with a project of his own". While the director specifically mentioned the likes of Fortnite and Apex Legends as examples of titles that he would like to develop on, he was tight-lipped about whether or not there was actually a FFXIV battle royale title in the works, or whether it could be a possibility in the future.

Fortnite Lawsuits Dropped For Now

The thought of a FFXIV battle royale game using the existing characters from the MMORPG is pretty exciting. There's been a great cast of supporting and primary NPCs and beloved figures built up over the years. It would be quite the experience if a potential battle royal property from Square Enix went with the Apex Legends approach and allowed players to take on the roles of well-known characters in the game's lore in a fight to the death. For one, there would definitely be a large roster to choose from, and the skillsets of in-game NPCs are varied enough to create the kind of chaos that battle royale games thrive on.

While Yoshida wasn't quite clear on whether or not his innovative idea for a take on Fortnite would actually take place in the Final Fantasy universe, it is the project that he's the most embedded with at Square Enix so it seems the likely choice. With Shadowbringers on the horizon, Yoshida probably isn't working on another property right now but it's always nice to dream.
