It's been nearly twenty-five years since the original Final Fantasy 7 released on Sony's PlayStation. Although it was a technical marvel at the time, FF7's graphics haven't aged especially well. Even with official remasters from Square Enix, problems exist. Thankfully, a new fan-made mod gives players a true, modern experience with the original FF7 now.

Arguably the most popular game in the entire Final Fantasy franchise, at least in the West, FF7 is beloved by countless fans around the globe. Centering on protagonist Cloud Strife, FF7's story is a sweeping and sometimes heartbreaking tale with a memorable and beloved cast of characters. And while FF7 Remake gives fans a chance to experience the narrative in a somewhat different way, the new Satsuki mod allows people to play the original game with impressive HD graphics that feels decidedly modern but also classic.

Created by Satsuki Yatoshi, the SYW mod - or Satsuki mod as it's being commonly called - overhauls the game's graphics into HD. The remasters of FF7 rendered characters and other details in HD, but many of the backgrounds and cinematics left a lot to be desired. Thankfully, the Satsuki mod aims to fix all of that by recreating the entire game into high definition.

What The Satsuki Mod Changes About Final Fantasy 7

Despite how beloved Final Fantasy 7 is, the graphics aren't nearly as impressive as they were in 1997. Even HD remasters of the game have mostly only fixed character models. And while the Satsuki mod may not make characters look as good as they do in FF7 Remake, the mod's most impressive achievement is the way it overhauls backgrounds, layers, and animations.

The Satsuki mod overhauls 689 backgrounds and nearly 14,000 animation files. The creator, Satsuki Yatoshi, also manually optimized 7000 layers. The mod also enhances mini-games and the cinematics, giving FF7 a truly modern look. From the opening cinematic to the long animations for the Knights of the Round summon, everything has a nice new HD look. Currently, the final version of the mod has been finished, and it seems to be working great.

The Satsuki mod is only available for PC users, and is compatible with that version of FF7. The mod is a great way to fix FF7's graphical problems and make everything look more modern while still retaining its classic appeal. The Satsuki mod can be downloaded on Qhimm, and it's a great way for PC players to enjoy Final Fantasy 7 in full HD.
