A new PC mod for Final Fantasy VII Remake replaces protagonist Cloud Strife with a playable version of Zack Fair. As fans are well aware, Zack Fair plays a minor role in FF7, having died ahead of the main game's events while trying to save Cloud. This doesn't make Zack any less of an important figure in the grand scheme of things, however, especially when considering how closely his story ties into the overarching narrative and its key players.

Interestingly, Zack Fair rarely receives mention in Final Fantasy 7, with all of his on-screen appearances taking place in flashbacks towards the end of the story campaign. This particular entry only marks the beginning of his adventures in the world of Final Fantasy, though. A fan-favorite character, Zack's most significant role in the series occurs in FF7 prequel Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, where he stars as the main protagonist. While some fans hold out hope that he'll one day return to the center of attention, a PC modder decided to take matters into their own hands.

As spotted by DSOGaming, Nexus Mods user jujub recently uploaded a mod that allows Final Fantasy 7 Remake players on PC to swap out Cloud Strife for Zack Fair. Since this counts as no more than a character swap, users should note that playable Zack will not sound or behave like the man himself - it's basically Cloud with a new skin. Still, FF7 Remake fans may get some fun out of the mod, which looks promising in the screenshots featured below:

While the mod offers little more than a basic character swap, the work from jujub still warrants applause. The screenshots look convincing, even if those who download the mod won't actually be experiencing the peaks and valleys of Final Fantasy 7 as fan-favorite hero Zack Fair. And who knows, perhaps series publisher Square Enix will eventually bring Zack's Crisis Core adventure to modern platforms?

After an incredibly long wait, Square Enix unleashed the first part of its Final Fantasy 7 remake project in April 2020 as a timed exclusive for PS4. The award-winning title finally migrated to PC in late 2021, though a wide array of in-game bugs and technical issues stopped many from enjoying the experience as intended. Now the wait continues for part two of the remade adventure. As of writing, Square Enix has yet to specify when exactly the highly-anticipated entry will hit digital stores and retailers.
