Red XIII might not have been a full party member in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but modders have managed to make him playable anyway. Final Fantasy 7 Remake only covers the Midgar portion of Final Fantasy 7which means that many of the playable characters from the original game don't make an appearance.

Square Enix revealed in March that Red XIII won't be playable in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. In Final Fantasy 7, Red XIII joins the party when they reach the Shinra Headquarters, as he is being held captive within the building. The party visits the Shinra Headquarters near the end of the Midgar section of the game. As such, the developers decided to make Red XIII a temporary ally to the party, as it was too late in the story to introduce mechanics for a whole new character. However, the developers did add a new floor to the Shinra building where Red XIII could show off his abilities to the player.

It's now possible to play as Red XIII in Final Fantasy 7 Remake with the aid of fan-made mods. According to SP1sta modder named Xeeyamo has created a save editor that allows the player to manipulate the game, even though it's currently only available on PlayStation 4. The save editor allows the player to control the number of items and Materia in the player's possession, move to locations that are out of bounds, and make Red XIII playable. Footage of playable Red XIII has been uploaded to Twitter by MP1stLara.

There are limitations to using Red XIII in combat, as the party will usually reset after major cutscenes. This means that the player can only use Red XIII for short bursts of time, especially considering how many cutscenes in Final Fantasy 7 Remake there are. However, it's nice to know that this is possible.

Red XIII will almost certainly be playable in the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 RemakeThe only reason he didn't make the cut this time was because he didn't appear until late in the story. Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive until April 10, 2021, and once this timed exclusivity ends the game will almost certainly be released on PC. The PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake will probably become a favorite subject for modders, and it's likely that Red XIII will become fully-functional in an upcoming mod. It's amazing to see a mod make Red XIII playable in the PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and it opens all kinds of possibilities for future fan-made projects.
