The recent Final Fantasy 7 Remake modernizes everything about the original game, even down to Final Fantasy 7's dress scene. Ever since FF7 launched on the PlayStation in 1997, the game left a massive impression on its players with its unique story stuffed to the gills with lovable and memorable characters. However, time hasn't been so kind to the polygonal classic, so when Square Enix announced Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the community lost its collective mind pondering how Midgar would look on modern hardware. One of the most memorable yet goofy scenes in the original game involved the game's protagonist, Cloud Strife, an edgy sword-wielding mercenary with an attitude, cross-dressing to rescue his childhood friend, and the remake does an excellent job of recreating it for modern audiences.

The scene takes place in Wall Market, an entertainment district located in Sector 6 of the Midgar slums that is well known for its bars and night clubs. After realizing that his childhood friend and potential love interest Tifa has auditioned to become Don Corneo's "bride" in hopes of completing an investigation on the man, Cloud assembles a plan to save her. Don Corneo doubles as a ruler of Wall Market and an organizer of crime in the city, and his obsession with attractive females essentially requires someone to be an attractive female herself in order to gain any sort of audience with him. As such, Cloud ends up acquiring a dress so that he can fool Corneo into granting them an audience with him.

Both the original Final Fantasy 7 and the FF7 Remake share these basic story beats during this portion of the story, but both games tackle the scenario differently. In the PlayStation 1 release, Cloud and Aeris approach Don Corneo's mansion only to be turned down by the guard, who claims that he cannot grant entry to the spiky-haired eco-terrorist because of his gender. Aeris then proposes that Cloud dresses up like a woman to fool the guard into allowing them to see Corneo so they can continue with their mission. The player must then explore Wall Market and complete miscellaneous tasks, such as delivering medication for an individual who is excessively drunk and destroying the competition in a squatting contest, to obtain the various pieces of Cloud's feminine outfit. After all of the required pieces of the dress are collected, Cloud heads to the clothing store to complete his transformation into a diva and storm Corneo's mansion.

How FF7 Remake Improves Final Fantasy 7's Dress-Up Scene

FF7 Dress Dance Honey Bee

This segment in Final Fantasy 7 is far briefer than in the remake, but the premise is the same. Cloud and Aerith, whose name was changed from Aeris in the remake, still need to find a way into Corneo's mansion to save Tifa, but the approach is slightly different. There exists a trio of individuals who offer endorsements to become a candidate for Corneo's "bride," and one of whom offers to help craft Aerith a dress if the duo participates in the Corneo Colosseum matches beneath the city. Cloud and Aerith's exceptional combat performance grasps the attention of another endorser, Andrea, who invites Cloud down to the Honeybee Inn.

Upon his arrival at Midgar's depiction of a Playboy Bunny-infested strip club, both Cloud and the player are introduced to Andrea, who boasts extraordinary confidence as well as a feminine side. He challenges Cloud to join him to dance to prove that he "knows how to move," and the player is treated to a charming mini-game in which Cloud gets totally groovy on-stage in front of a live audience. After their dance concludes, Andrea fulfills Cloud's request and dolls the grumpy edge-lord up for the whole club to see.

This mini-game features outstanding cinematography while depicting one of Final Fantasy's most iconic characters in an all-new perspective that comes completely unexpected. Although the scene is stunning from an artistic perspective, perhaps its biggest accomplishment in modernizing this classic moment is its inclusiveness and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community. Although it is never directly stated in-game, Andrea seems to be a massive supporter of this movement, telling Cloud that "true beauty is an expression of the heart, a thing without shame, to which notions of gender don't apply." It's a heartwarming and welcoming message that transforms this scene from a silly moment into a statement supporting the LGBTQ+ community in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
