Michael Mann’s Ferrari confirms filming start with behind-the-scenes image. Legendary director Mann last released a film with 2015’s box office disappointment Blackhat. But the filmmaker is now finally ready to return with Ferrari, a passion project he’s been working on for two decades.

Ferrari indeed was first announced way back in 2015 with Christian Bale set to take on the lead role of Enzo Ferrari. When Bale was unable to continue on the project, Hugh Jackman then became attached to the film along with Noomi Rapace. After more years and casting changes, Ferrari finally came together with Adam Driver as Enzo, alongside Penelope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Patrick Dempsey, Jack O’Connell, Sarah Gadon, Gabriel Leone and more.

Now Ferrari has taken another important step toward finally making it to movie screens. STX Films announces that Mann has begun principal photography on his passion project, a milestone marked by the release of a new BTS image featuring the director himself hard at work. See the image in the space below:

Set during the summer of 1957, Ferrari sees Enzo Ferrari’s iconic car company in crisis, facing bankruptcy after just ten years of existence. At the same time, Enzo’s marriage to wife Laura (Cruz) in also in a tempestuous place. So Enzo decides to risk everything on a single gamble that can turn his fortunes around, entering his car in the long-distance 1957 Mille Miglia race, with legendary driver Piero Taruffi (Dempsey) behind the wheel.

Mann is of course best known for crime films like Thief, Manhunter and Heat, as well as the iconic cop show Miami Vice. But the director has occasionally dipped his toe into the world of real-life storytelling, directing both the issue-driven drama The Insider and the sports biopic Ali. Ferrari now gives Mann a unique chance to combine several of his cinematic interests, as it tells a true-life story with both an Ali-like classic sports angle and a lot of pulse-pounding action.

Fans of Mann are obviously thrilled to see him coming back with a new big-screen project after such a prolonged absence. Of course the true dream is for Mann to make another of his signature crime films, especially now that he’s released a Heat prequel in novel form. But in the absence of more criminal action, they will certainly take a revved-up race-car movie crossed with a character drama, featuring an ensemble cast truly worthy of a Mann film. Ferrari is set to hit screens in fall of 2023.
