Evangeline Lilly wants Brie Larson's Captain Marvel to lead an all-female Avengers film. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is growing and adapting with Hollywood to be more inclusive and diverse with its leads. This is a major point of concentration for Marvel Studios, where films led by women and people of color are being considered even more. Black Panther was their first film to star a non-white lead, while Ant-Man and the Wasp was the first to give a female co-billing. This is only going to improve with Captain Marvel next year, and Black Widow likely coming in 2020.
As the MCU keeps adding major, powerful, and popular female characters, there's been talk internally of teaming them all up. This concept initially was pitched by the female MCU stars when they asked Kevin Feige where they're team-up movie was. There's no official word on the plans for such a film, but it would need a leader if it happens - and one MCU star knows who it should be.
PopBuzz asked Lilly about the possible all-female Avengers film and for her thoughts on who should lead it. After first saying Wasp should be in charge, Lilly quickly realized how "terrifying" that would be. She reconsidered her stance and then gave a suggestion for what is possibly the most likely outcome: Captain Marvel.
"Well, it seems only natural Captain Marvel would lead because she is a general? And she’s the captain. And Captain America leads the other Avengers, right, so maybe Captain Marvel would lead. I’d think so."
Wasp has proven herself to be a capable hero and leader, but Carol Danvers should be the clear choice at this point. After Larson is introduced, she will be the most powerful character the MCU has. Not only does she have the strength and ability to lead by example, but she also has the personality and experience of leading. Lilly knows this first hand after teasing a Captain Marvel/Wasp scene in Avengers 4 too. She will also soon be Marvel's most prominent female hero and even lead the entire MCU, so why wouldn't she take command of the female team?
While the actresses and fans are understandably excited about the possibility of an all-female film, it's still unclear if Marvel is actually going to make it. They've said all the right things at this point, but actions speak louder than words. With Marvel Studios being extra secretive about what happens after Avengers 4, any movement on this film could still be over a year away, if not more. Should it happen, then who leads will be an interesting development to watch. But as of right now, Lilly's suggestion of Captain Marvel is the obvious and likely correct one to make. Now we just have to hope she actually gets the chance.
