Proctor John was the primary antagonist in the last couple of episodes of Fear The Walking Dead season 3, but what happened to him after the season finale? Played by Ray McKinnon of Sons of Anarchy and Mayans MC fame, Proctor John was the leader of a motorcycle gang called the Proctors who – in John’s own words – spent their pre-apocalypse time “raising hell in SoCal.” Post-apocalypse, the Proctors hoarded resources and set up a trading post known as El Bazar located in an abandoned bullfighting arena in the border city of Mexicali.

At El Bazar, the Proctors sold everything from essentials like food and water to shadier things like booze, sex, and drugs. They ruled with an iron fist too and anybody indebted to the Proctors was forbidden from leaving El Bazar until their debts were paid off. Proctor John first appeared in Fear The Walking Dead’s penultimate season 3 episode “Things Bad Begun” in which he told Alicia Clark (Alycia Debnam-Carey) of his plans to establish a series of interconnected trading posts stretching all the way from San Diego to the Gulf Coast of Texas, and coerced her into going to Houston with him.

It soon transpired Proctor John intended to take control of the Gonzales Dam as part of his plans to monopolize the US-Mexico border. His hostile takeover was thwarted, however, after a standoff left several of his men dead and Nick Clark (Frank Dillane) blew up the Gonzales Dam in Fear The Walking Dead’s season 3 finale “Sleigh Ride.” After the explosion, it looked like Proctor John managed to escape before the dam collapsed but he and his gang haven’t been seen. Their current status – dead or alive – is unknown.

While it’s possible Proctor John did die in the dam explosion despite bidding a hasty retreat, the incident wasn’t as deadly as one might think. In the Fear The Walking Dead season 3 finale, it was revealed Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) had survived the explosion and season 4 showed Alicia, Nick and Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) were all fine too. Even Daniel Salazar (Rubén Blades) made a surprise return in Fear The Walking Dead’s fifth and most recent season, even though he was presumed dead after the explosion.

There’s a chance Proctor John is still alive too and his time on Fear The Walking Dead isn’t over. Although there hasn’t been any indication from either Ray McKinnon or AMC that Proctor John’s return is imminent, he did have plans to head for Texas which is where the show’s fourth and fifth seasons were set. If Proctor John and his gang are alive and the action stays in Texas for Fear The Walking Dead season 6, there’s a chance fans could see him again. Stranger things have happened in the Walking Dead Universe.
