The official trailer for Fear the Walking Dead season 7 teases an apocalyptic standoff in the making. Set to premiere next month, AMC’s spin-off zombie drama first began as a prequel to The Walking Dead. However, since the fourth season, the show’s events have run almost alongside the main series. Morgan Jones (Lennie James) from The Walking Dead even crossed over to the spin-off in season 4, and the series shifted to focus on his story.

Season 6 of Fear the Walking Dead followed Morgan after he was left for dead by Virginia, leader of the Pioneers, while the rest of his group were separated and dispersed across different settlements. The group would eventually come across the Doomsday cult leader, Teddy Maddox (John Glover), who had the unnerving ability to launch ten nuclear warheads across the state of Texas. With Maddox’s plan to destroy what’s left of the world, FTWD season 6 ended with a literal bang as the warheads detonated across the state and the divided group took shelter in various locations. Now, the wait for season 7 of FTWD is almost over.

Via The Walking Dead YouTube page, AMC released the official trailer for Fear the Walking Dead season 7, which teases an apocalyptic standoff. Amid the orange haze and gas-masked scenery, the trailer sets up a world of even more devastation and desperation. The trailer also features Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) narrating with a menacing voiceover that indicates the battle for loyalty is only just beginning. View the entire trailer below:

From Strand’s narration and the key art AMC released for season 7, it seems that the conman from FTWD season 1 is gearing up to be the next big antagonist. Strand and Morgan have always flexed different leadership styles when navigating the post-apocalyptic world. While they’ve cooperated in the past, it seems their time as uneasy allies may soon completely unravel. The trailer also introduces Aisha Tyler to the FTWD cast, although it’s still unclear exactly which character she’s playing, or which side she’ll be forced to pick: either Strand’s or Morgan’s.

The theme of season 7 of Fear the Walking Dead seems to be that of new beginnings, especially since the nukes literally transformed the landscape. Now that the air itself is toxic, the survivors have more to worry about than just zombies. Additionally, given the tensions boiling amongst the survivors, it's clear that sides will soon need to be chosen. While the series is set to premiere on October 17, AMC+ subscribers will be happy to know that they can stream it one week early.
