Warning: This article contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead season 7, episode 7.

Unfortunately, Fear the Walking Dead season 7 is skipping some key stories. The Fear the Walking Dead season 7 episode “The Portrait”, mentioned two events that should not have have occurred off-screen. Unlike the situation with Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), the series is unlikely to revisit these moments with flashbacks in any upcoming episodes.

The nuclear apocalypse set up a number of branching storylines by splitting off the characters into several different groups. One in particular contained nearly half the cast. Daniel (Rubén Blades), Luciana (Danay Garcia), Rabbi Jacob (Peter Jacobson), Sarah (Mo Collins), Charlie (Alexa Nisenson), and Wes (Colby Hollman) all boarded Isabelle’s CRM helicopter together to escape the blast. Of those characters, only Sarah received her own story in episode 4, but the rest have been largely absent. Their roles in episodes 4 and 6 were essentially just cameos, and nothing more. Aside from Sarah, none of these characters have been directly involved in Fear's season 7’s Strand story yet.

Fear the Walking Dead season 7 has slowly provided stories for its other characters, but has yet to make significant use of Daniel, Luciana, Jacob, Charlie, or Wes. A CRM story was set up for them, but they ended up being left out of FTWD's CRM-driven episode. In "The Portrait", Fear the Walking Dead revealed that they’ve already reunited with Morgan’s group, as Morgan (Lennie James) told Strand (Colman Domingo) that they recently picked them up. Given that these are all major characters, it’s a bit surprising that FTWD didn’t give them same treatment that it gave the rest of the cast, who all had episodes that eventually linked their respective groups to the main plot. Instead, the series inexplicably skipped whatever experiences that Daniel, Luciana, Jacob, Charlie, and Wes had during Fear the Walking Dead's nuclear apocalypse.

That’s not the only thing that The Walking Dead spinoff glossed over with these characters. Much of the episode revolved around Morgan’s efforts to contact his friends so that they could fight off Arnold’s Stalker group. Rather than take this as a chance to show characters like Daniel in action, Fear the Walking Dead simply jumped ahead, with Morgan later telling Strand that his allies succeeded in their mission. Such a fight would have been exciting to see, especially since this group has been missing for most of the season.

Fear the Walking Dead choosing not to show what they went through, the reunion with Morgan, and the fight with the Stalkers is indicative of how much season 7 has been underutilizing so many important members of its main cast. Admittedly, the show’s anthology format has allowed for stand-out stories for people like Morgan and Strand, but its approach this season clearly favors some characters over others. It’s likely too late to explore what already happened with Daniel’s group, which is why the show must rectify this later with much-deserved screen-time and meaningful stories in future episodes. All of them should get their due in the second half of Fear the Walking Dead season 7.
