UPDATE: Fear the Walking Dead season 5 will premiere at 9/8c, not 10/9c.

-

Ahead of tomorrow's trailer release, AMC has confirmed that Fear the Walking Dead season 5 will premiere on June 2, 2019. The zombie drama will be followed by the series premiere of NOS4A2, a vampire horror series based on the novel by Joe Hill.

The season 9 finale of AMC's original zombie hit, The Walking Dead, will air Sunday night, and fans are still reeling from the events of last week's episode, "The Calm Before." The season finale is called "The Storm," and will see the survivors of Hilltop, Kingdom, and Alexandria trying to deal with the bloody fallout of The Fair, an infamous event lifted from Robert Kirkman's comic series. After The Walking Dead season 9 ends, fans won't have too long to wait until Fear the Walking Dead returns to take over as AMC's Sunday night dose of the undead.

Per Deadline, AMC has announced the return of Fear the Walking Dead for season 5 on June 2, with the season premiere airing at 9/8c, following by the series premiere of NOS4A2 at 9/8c. Here's the official set-up synopsis for Fear the Walking Dead season 5:

The group’s mission is clear: locate survivors and help make what’s left of the world a slightly better place. With dogged determination, Morgan Jones (James) leads the group with a philosophy rooted in benevolence, community and hope. Each character believes that helping others will allow them to make up for the wrongs of their pasts. But trust won’t be easily earned. Their mission of helping others will be put to the ultimate test when our group finds themselves in unchartered territory, one which will force them to face not just their pasts but also their fears. It is only through facing those fears that the group will discover an entirely new way to live, one that will leave them forever changed.

Morgan Jones, who is one of the longest-surviving characters in franchise, first appeared in The Walking Dead's pilot and went on to return at various points in the parent show, before eventually making his way over to Fear the Walking Dead in season 4. The spinoff has struggled to reach the same ratings heights as The Walking Dead and AMC has recently been making efforts to link the two shows. Recurring Walking Dead character Dwight will also be moving to Fear the Walking Dead in season 5.

The first trailer for Fear the Walking Dead season 5 is expected to release on Sunday after making its debut at WonderCon, and the show's Twitter account intriguingly claimed that "something BIG" will be announced during the panel. It's possible that there's another crossover character hiding in the wings, or the announcement might have something to do with the third Walking Dead TV show that's currently in development (though that's considerably less likely).

Fear the Walking Dead killed off some major characters in season 4, and Alicia is now the last remaining member of the Clark family, whom we met in the show's pilot. With the characters having lost so much, it won't be easy to "make what's left of the world a slightly better place," as the synopsis states. However, survival is all about beating impossible odds.
