Fear The Walking Dead: New Image & Details Tease Season 2 Return

Fear the Walking Dead Season 2 Poster

[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Fear the Walking Dead ahead.]

While AMC's hit series The Walking Dead continues to make headlines (especially after the show's critically divisive season 6 finale), its newer, younger sibling Fear the Walking Dead isn't doing so bad either. After averaging 11.2 million viewers an episode in season 1, becoming the highest-rated first season of any series in cable history, the horror drama has shown no signs of slowing down going into the second half of season 2 and even the already-announced season 3.

When we last saw Madison, Travis, Chris, Nick, Alicia and the rest, they were all split up and dealing with their own very different problems within the zombie apocalypse. Travis had decided to not come back to the group, instead setting off for parts unknown with his troubled son Chris. And Nick had chosen to side with Celia and her belief that the undead are just a new beginning for humanity. The family dynamic that Fear the Walking Dead relied on for its original premise has been shattered, and the rest of season 2 will focus on the characters trying to get that foundation back together.

In a new interview, Fear the Walking Dead showrunner Dave Erickson tells EW "The big question for the back half [of season 2] is when and how will the family reunite?” In the meantime though, viewers will definitely enjoy the ride because Erickson also says, “The interesting thing will be watching them splinter off in multiple directions and seeing how each group can survive and what they do to find their place in the apocalypse.”

Nick, in particular, will be walking a dangerous line when we return, staying amongst the infected rather than rejoining his mother and sister. EW also has a new image of Nick (up to no good, by the look of it) from the second half of season 2, below.

As Erickson explains, “For Nick, he wants to find a place where people see the dead the way he does, where people see the dead not as a threat, not as a danger, but as an extension of themselves – sort of an evolution. That’s his goal." Yet as we know from watching The Walking Dead, zombies are a major threat to everyone living, even though there's no doubt Nick will find at least one other group of deluded people out there in the world worshipping them as the second coming.

"So, when he leaves, when he realizes Celia’s gone, and the compound is burned, he’s going to set out to find people who are more likeminded and will give him some clues along the way. And then it sort of falls into the be-careful-what-you-wish-for category," Erickson reminds fans. "When he actually gets to a place with some degree of spiritual comfort for him. It’s not going to last very long.” For every moment of salvation and peace in the Walking Dead franchise, we all know there's just another horrible, devastating moment on the horizon. Nick may not be long for this world, because if you play with fire soon or later you're going to get burned.

Fear the Walking Dead returns on Sunday, August 21 @9pm on AMC.
