The cast of Fear The Walking Dead would be game for a crossover with Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes. Shortly prior to the season 9 premiere of The Walking Dead, it came to light that Lincoln was planning to step away from the long-running zombie series after nearly a decade in the role, and in Rick's final episode, the character made a noble sacrifice to save his people. While Rick's friends believe him dead, however, the protagonist was actually saved by Jadis, who called a mysterious helicopter to fly in and whisk both herself and Rick away. Viewers currently have no clue regarding Rick's whereabouts, but AMC have announced that the story will be continued in the form of a Rick Grimes movie.
Rick's fate has yet to be addressed on The Walking Dead, but hints have begun to emerge in spinoff series, Fear The Walking Dead. Currently in its fifth season, Fear The Walking Dead's main group of survivors have crashed near a hazardous nuclear plant while attempting to stage a heroic rescue and, to make matters worse, Maggie Grace's Al has been abducted. Prior to her disappearance, Al was investigating the corpse of a body armor-clad soldier and found a map bearing the same strange symbol that was previously seen on the helicopter carrying Rick. Since then, the chopper itself has made an appearance in Fear The Walking Dead, although the group's intentions and identity remain unknown.
As Fear The Walking Dead edges closer to revealing details about Rick's whereabouts, the show's cast have expressed a desire to feature in a crossover with Andrew Lincoln's character. Speaking with TV Guide, Daniel Salazar actor, Ruben Blades, gave his take on a potential meeting, saying:
"If there's anyone who would be in the movie with Rick, it would be Al... I hope they sneak Salazar in there to go rescue Al."
Blades' sentiments were echoed by Alexa Nisenson, Fear The Walking Dead's Charlie, who added, "And I can just pop in there a little."
Lennie James previously worked with Andrew Lincoln during his time appearing on The Walking Dead and he too would be interested in another meeting between the duo's characters, with the actor stating:
"I had a great time working with Andy. I'd work with him any day of the week. So any opportunity to be back in front of the camera, hanging out on set with him, I would absolutely jump at."
Fear The Walking Dead began with a distinctly different setting, time period and tone compared to the franchise's parent show, but the two series have recently started running parallel to each other. As well as Morgan jumping ship, The Walking Dead's Dwight has now debuted in Fear The Walking Dead, continuing to search for his wife. With clues relating to Rick's disappearance now featuring in the spinoff, it seems like a full blown crossover venture is inevitable at some point.
Even though Al and Rick have been taken by the same group, it seems unlikely that Andrew Lincoln will make an appearance on Fear The Walking Dead. Lincoln quit the role largely because of the filming demands involved and it's hard to see him changing that stance to turn up on a series that has a far lower viewership. With that said, there's a reasonable chance that some Fear The Walking Dead cast members could find their way into Rick's upcoming movie, and therefore the prospect of a Grimes-Salazar crossover or a Morgan reunion doesn't seem entirely implausible.
Feat The Walking Dead season 5 continues June 30th on AMC.
