The Fear the Walking Dead season 6 premiere did indeed confirm Morgan’s survival, but what it didn’t reveal was the identity of his mysterious savior. At the end of the Fear The Walking Dead season 5 finale, Morgan Jones (Lennie James) found himself in a precarious situation. Having been left behind by the Pioneers, shot by Virginia (Colby Minifie), and surrounded by fast-approaching zombies, death appeared to be right around the corner for Morgan. The finale ended with his fate uncertain.

After several months of waiting, Fear the Walking Dead finally revealed what happened to him in the season 6 finale. Apparently, Morgan – who blacked out after the finale -- was rescued by an unknown character who fought off the zombies and stitched him up. Ever since, he’s been living in isolation in a water tower, which he used to set up a sanctuary for Grace (Karen David), in the hopes that they would all be united at some point in the future. Later, Morgan broke his no-killing rule when he decapitated a bounty hunter hired by Virginia. Now, an all-new Morgan Jones is committed to taking the fight to Virginia and the Pioneers.

Morgan’s adventure in the premiere raised several questions about what the show has in store for season 6, one of which being the purpose for the mysterious key that the bounty hunter stole from his victim in the opening scene. There’s also the question of who saved Morgan. It could be that the person who rescued him after the season 5 finale is a brand-new character, or it may be a familiar face from a past season. The only clue came from the note they left Morgan, which said “You don't know me, but I heard your message. You need to do the same. You still have things left to do.” This means that if Morgan’s rescuer is an existing character, it’s someone who has never crossed paths with him before. Here’s every theory on who saved Morgan from the zombies.

Sherry

Sherry and Dwight from Fear the Walking Dead

One of the two most popular theories regarding what happened after the Fear the Walking Dead season 5 finale is that Morgan was saved by Sherry (Christina Evangelista). On The Walking Dead, Sherry was Dwight’s wife and a member of the Saviors. Sometime after becoming one of Negan’s “wives”, Sherry helped Daryl (Norman Reedus) escape and ended up leaving as well. After the war with the Saviors ended, Dwight (Austin Amelio) left Alexandria to go look for her. His search was still ongoing when he made the move to Fear the Walking Dead in season 5. Later in the season, Dwight found out that Sherry no longer wants to be found and decided to put his search on hold.

In the finale, Dwight thought he heard Sherry’s voice on the radio, but determined that it was a hallucination. However, it’s possible that it was Sherry, and that she was much closer than anyone imagined. Some believe that she may have been on her way to see Dwight when she came across the zombies about to devour Morgan. What furthered strengthened this theory is the confirmation that Sherry will be appearing in season 6 in some capacity. The reveal that Sherry will be a part of the show’s season 6 story makes her the strongest candidate to be Morgan’s savior.

Isabelle

Fear The Walking Dead Isabelle

Like Sherry, Isabelle (Sydney Lemmon) is a character with no prior connection to Morgan Jones. In season 5, she was revealed to be a member of the CRM organization, the same group who abducted Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). In an episode that shed light on CRM’s real motives, Isabelle had a brief romance with Althea (Maggie Grace) before flying off in the black helicopter. It’s likely that she’s far-removed from the world of Fear the Walking Dead by now, but it is at least possible that she turned her back on CRM. Scott Gimple, who oversees The Walking Dead universe, did tease a potential Isabelle-Althea reunion, so she could always re-enter the picture. Later on down the line, Fear the Walking Dead season 6 could reveal that Isabelle is back, and that she saved Morgan before going her own way again. If this is the case, an upcoming episode could have her encounter Al again.

Isabelle’s inclusion would allow Fear the Walking Dead to address a potential plotline that was teased in a season 5 episode. Earlier, Virginia found out about the black helicopter from Al and mentioned that she wanted to discuss this further. She doesn’t seem to be aware of CRM, but it makes sense that the Pioneers would need to be cautious of such a massive organization. If she were to discover Isabelle’s presence, she could seek to capture her and find out everything she wants to know about CRM.

Madison

Kim Dickens as Madison Fear The Walking Dead

Some are theorizing that Madison (Kim Dickens), who was Fear the Walking Dead’s main protagonist before Morgan’s arrival, could have secretly returned to the series. Flashbacks in the first half of season 4 revealed that Madison seemingly died in a fire at a stadium after saving her group from a horde of zombies. At the time, her death was confirmed by co-showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg. Regardless, this hasn’t stopped fans from coming to the conclusion that Madison somehow survived and saved Morgan. As for why she didn’t stick around, it could be that she doesn’t want to waste any more time finding her daughter. The idea behind this theory is that sometime after making it out of the stadium, she found one of Al’s tapes and managed to locate Morgan’s group just in time to rescue him from the zombies. What makes this theory perhaps more plausible is that the showrunners were asked about the theory, but didn’t debunk it.

Madison being back would be a huge game-changer for Fear the Walking Dead. If she did survive, her return would shake up the show in a big way. Since the cast has been mostly rebuilt since her death, she doesn’t have a relationship with most of the characters in Morgan’s group – including Morgan himself – but there are a few who would be heavily impacted by seeing her again, such as Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), Strand (Colman Domingo), and possibly Luciana (Danai Garcia) and Salazar (Ruben Blades). There’s also the matter of Charlie (Alexa Nisenson), who never met Madison, but her history on the show would certainly create some interesting conflict between them. It was Charlie who killed Madison’s son, Nick (Frank Dillane) back in season 4. All things considered, if Fear the Walking Dead did somehow bring Madison back, her return would offer a ton of storytelling potential.
