Warning: SPOILERS for Fear The Walking Dead season 6, episodes 8 & 9.

June (Jenna Elfman) has become the perfect replacement for Madison (Kim Dickens) in Fear the Walking Dead. Madison, who had served as the show’s main protagonist and the leader, left a void when she died in season 4, with many feeling the series made a mistake by killing her off. Season 4 was a period of rebuilding for the AMC series, as the show parted ways with some major characters and brought in several new faces, one of which being Elfman’s June, a former nurse.

Since her debut on Fear the Walking Dead, June has certainly gone through some tough times, as she’s been consistently tested by the challenges that have faced Morgan’s group. Shortly after marrying John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt), the two were torn apart and split up by the Pioneers. Driven by a need to help people, June chose to remain in her new home and continue to contribute. But things took a turn for the worst for her when Dakota (Zoe Colletti) killed John.

In the latest episode, June made a decision that is sure to be divisive in the episodes to come. After defeating Virginia (Colby Minifie), Morgan declared they wouldn’t resort to executing her in their new community. Despite this, June murdered Virginia as soon as the opportunity presented itself. Virginia didn’t kill John, but June felt that she enabled Dakota by keeping the fact that she killed Cameron secret. June’s actions were reminiscent of the choices Madison made in Fear the Walking Dead.

Kim Dickens as Madison Fear The Walking Dead

She was a person who could be cold-blooded when the situation called for it. This was a key aspect of her personality that goes back to before the zombie apocalypse began. It was revealed when she was young, she killed her father because of his abusive behavior toward her mother. There were also numerous instances in the present where Madison expressed a willingness to do whatever it took for the safety of her children.

Madison killing Troy for leading a horde to their community was one example of her not putting up with people causing trouble and hurting others. Looking at this, it’s likely she wouldn’t have shared Morgan’s opinion about Virginia’s fate. Knowing that Virginia deserved to be punished for what she did – and also to eliminate a potential threat – there’s a strong chance Madison would have killed her, even if others weren’t in agreement. Doing what she thought was necessary even when it meant going against the wishes of her people was how Madison operated, and this line of thinking seems to define June’s character right now as well.

Madison’s confidence and determination to keep the group safe made her a favorite among fans. Recently, there was some hope that Fear the Walking Dead would undo her death and reveal her to be the person who saved Morgan (Lennie James). However, the Dakota reveal disproved that theory. With it becoming increasingly clear that Madison isn’t coming back to the show, it may be a good thing people like June are starting to step up.
