What Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) experienced in Fear the Walking Dead’s season 6, episode 14, “Mother” amounted to an entertaining repeat of a Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) story from The Walking Dead season 8. Both episodes saw their main characters faced with very similar problems, and the same shocking twist of a returning character.

In Fear the Walking Dead's “Mother” episode, Alicia’s road trip with Dakota (Zoe Colletti) and Teddy (John Glover) was interrupted by the return of Cole (Sebastian Sozzi), a minor character from season 4 and a former member of Madison’s community. It was believed that he had died during the attack on the stadium, but apparently he and a few others survived. Alicia was happy to see him – until she found out that he wasn’t the person she thought he was. Cole had become a member of a ruthless gang of highway killers and robbers. In the end, Alicia executed him, feeling that he had wasted the chance Madison’s sacrifice had given him.

Alicia’s unexpected reunion with Cole in Fear the Walking Dead draws strong comparisons to what happened to The Walking Dead’s Rick in season 8. Early in the season, Rick was ambushed by Morales (Juan Pareja), who was a member of Rick’s original group that he traveled with all the way back in season 1. Much to Rick’s disappointment, Morales explained that in the time since that they last saw each other, he joined up with the Saviors and became loyal to Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Their conversation was cut short by Daryl (Norman Reedus), who immediately killed Morales as soon as he saw him holding Rick at gunpoint. Rick was stunned to see Morales die right before his eyes.

Morales returns and points a gun at Rick in The Walking Dead

In both situations, the episodes surprised viewers by bringing back forgotten characters that hadn’t been around in years, and then revealing that had they evolved into villains off-screen. What’s a bit less surprising is that neither of them were able to survive their return to the Walking Dead universe.

It’s also worth noting the huge impact that these incidents had on the characters, as both Rick and Alicia were profoundly affected by what happened. At this point in the story, Rick was fully invested in his crusade against the Saviors, who he felt no empathy for. But seeing Daryl gun him down like that contributed to some of his guilt and doubts about their actions. He had hoped that Morales could be saved, which is in contrast to Alicia, who seized an opportunity to kill Cole for what he had done with his life. Teddy’s words and what became of her mother’s community have instilled her with the depressing thought that Madison’s death may have been pointless. All things considered, Fear the Walking Dead did find some interesting ways to make Alicia’s encounter different to Rick’s and just as meaningful – if not more so – for her character’s journey.
