The Walking Dead franchise is poised to finally close the timeline gap between the main series and Fear the Walking Dead. For years now, the spinoff series has lagged behind The Walking Dead in terms of where it fits into the timeline. However, details regarding plans for FTWD's final season prove that it's about to catch up.

As a series originally designed to show the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, Fear the Walking Dead naturally took place earlier than the main show in its first few seasons, but Morgan's impending arrival as the first crossover character in season 4 forced the series to finally line things up with The Walking Dead. But, the two shows didn't stay on the same page for long. The Walking Dead jumped ahead by six years in season 9 and hasn't looked back. FTWD has enjoyed some time jumps of its own, but remains set several years back in the timeline of The Walking Dead universe.

Fear the Walking Dead Is Catching Up To The Walking Dead

According to a synopsis for Fear the Walking Dead season 8, the AMC series will break its final chapter into two parts, with the second part set seven years after the events of the first. With a huge time jump on par with the one utilized in The Walking Dead season 9, FTWD is on track to eliminate - or at least greatly reduce - the gap before its conclusion. Since both shows have featured additional time skips as of late, it's not abundantly clear how much time will separate them, but with FTWD moving up seven years, the difference shouldn't be significant anymore.

Fear the Walking Dead's Time Jump Makes Crossovers Possible Again

Even though the main show ended and Fear the Walking Dead is coming to an end as well, the franchise aligning their timelines is a move that makes a lot of sense for The Walking Dead's future. Both may be over after 2023, but its universe will live on through other shows, all of which being close to the main series' place in the franchise's timeline. As a result, it would have been difficult for anyone in FTWD's cast of characters to remain relevant in the Walking Dead universe had it remained in the past, but season 8's time jump should take care of this problem.

By catching up, Fear the Walking Dead will make crossovers possible again. This decision will remove a major obstacle that would normally prevent Lennie James' Morgan Jones, Dwight, or perhaps one of the show's original characters from appearing in an upcoming spinoff. Theocratically, Morgan could have a run-in with Rick and Michonne in their series, or Dwight and Sherry could cross paths with the now-reformed Negan in Walking Dead: Dead City. In a sense, the time jump can help ensure that not all Fear the Walking Dead characters are left behind when the Walking Dead franchise moves forward.
