Gloria Estefan has been cast in the Latinx remake of Father of the Bride. The famous 1991 comedy starred Steve Martin as George Banks, a father reluctant to give his daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) away on her wedding day. The film was a massive success and was followed by a sequel, Father of the Bride Part II, in 1995. Warner Bros. announced back in September 2020 that a Latinx adaptation of Father of the Bride was in the works, with Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) writing the script based on his personal experiences. Club de Cuervos director Gaz Alazraki will helm the film, which will also see Andy Garcia in the lead role and Adria Arjona as the titular bride. Now a superstar is joining the cast.
Deadline reports that Estefan is in negotiations to join the upcoming remake. Estefan would play Garcia's wife the Father of the Bride remake, which will center around a large Cuban-American family. According to the report, WB execs were uncertain Estefan would be interested in the offer, but she couldn't say no. "A resounding YES was my answer to the invitation to join my good friend, the incredibly talented Andy Garcia, for this new and wonderfully warm and funny incarnation of the classic, Father of the Bride!" Estefan said in a statement.
Like previous iterations, which include Spencer Tracy's 1950 movie, the Garcia-led film will follow a father coming to terms with his daughter getting married. The upcoming remake will tell the story through the multiple relationships within the large family. The film will reportedly be more of a romantic-comedy than past versions and will more closely follow the original 1950 movie than Martin's take on Father of the Bride.
While Estefan is most known for being one of the best-selling artists of all time, the "Conga" singer has some acting experience. She made her film debut in the 1999 Meryl Streep movie Music of the Heart. She has also appeared in television roles, including Glee, Jane the Virgin, and the One Day at a Time remake. Estefan fans will likely be very excited to see her star opposite Garcia in Father of the Bride.
