The first season of Netflix’s Fate: The Winx Saga ended by introducing the Dragon Flame — an ancient energy source that allows Bloom to awaken long-dormant fairy magic. In just two seasons, The Winx Saga distanced itself substantially from the Winx Club cartoon. Many of the core characters were essentially the same, but the fairy world, nature of magic, and overall tone had been altered significantly. Some Winx Club fans remain upset with the changes —especially Fate: The Winx Saga's whitewashing of Musa and Flora from the old show — while others have come to accept the new version as simply a different take on the beloved IP.

The Dragon Flame that's pioneered by Bloom is a huge magical power with great consequences. Most of Fate: The Winx Saga season 2 focuses on Bloom trying to control the Dragon Flame, and the extra powers that come with it. The Dragon Flame comes in handy many times throughout The Winx Saga season 2, and the energy source is so powerful that there are many who attempt to force Bloom to harness it for their own dastardly desires. In Winx Club, the Dragon Flame is a beneficial magical power that Bloom can use to heal, and break other powerful magic spells. Here's The Winx Saga Dragon Flame explained.

The History Of The Dragon Flame

Winx Club Great Dragon Flame

In the world of Fate: The Winx Saga, not much has been revealed about the nature of the Dragon Flame. Rosalind has said that it is very ancient magic and that it played a role in the creation of the Burned Ones a thousand years ago. She also revealed it’s the root of Bloom’s extraordinary powers.

The Dragon Flame was a huge part of the original Winx Club. In the cartoon, the Dragon Flame is a remnant of the Great Dragon – the ancient deity of the Magic Dimension who breathed all of existence into being. After creating the universe, the Great Dragon made its resting place on the planet Domino and granted a portion of its abilities to the royal family in the form of the Dragon Flame in the Winx Club cartoon. Lord Darkar, a.k.a. the Shadow Phoenix, an evil foil to the Great Dragon, led attacks on Domino to steal the power of the Dragon Flame, leading to the whole planet being frozen and all its citizens turned to stone.

The Dragon Flame was believed to have been lost after the fall of Domino, but it lived on in Bloom, daughter of the last King and Queen of Domino, who was rescued from her planet’s destruction by her older, sister Daphne. Over the course of Winx Club Bloom learns to channel that power. She is constantly pursued by evil forces hoping to use the Dragon Flame for themselves, and in the end, she is able to defeat Darkar and free Domino from its frozen prison.

How Fate: The Winx Saga Changes The Dragon Flame

Rosalind speak with Bloom in The Winx Saga

Fate: The Winx Saga doesn't necessarily stick close to the original version of the Dragon Flame. The magical power is mainly used a destructive force, but it does have some similarities. In the cartoon, the Dragon Flame grants incredible offensive power similar to what Bloom displays in her climactic battle with the Burned Ones, but it also gives her powerful healing abilities, extrasensory perception, and situational awareness (not dissimilar from The Winx Saga’s version of Musa), as well as the power to counteract some evil spells.

How Did Bloom Get The Power Of The Dragon Flame?

Bloom in Fate The Winx Saga

In Winx Club, Bloom inherited the power of the Dragon Flame as part of Domino’s royal family. That story could've been incorporated into Fate: The Winx Saga beyond season 1 and season 2, given that Bloom’s parents had yet to be revealed, but the show was canceled. Rosalind tells her she was kidnaped by the Blood Witches of Aster Dale, but she doesn’t say from where Bloom was stolen. There’s also the issue that Rosalind’s Blood Witch story wasn't proven, and anything she said should be regarded as suspect.

Of course, even if Fate did use the same explanation for Bloom’s connection to the Dragon Flame, it would still have had to make some changes. The Otherworld of The Winx Saga doesn’t have all the different dimensions and planets of Winx Club. There was no mention of the six Winx Saga fairy types, Domino, and the Aster Dale story has already pulled a lot from the cartoon’s Domino destruction storyline. However, with only a few of the Otherworld’s realms having been revealed, it would've been simple for Fate to make Domino one of the remaining ones and carry the same story from Winx Club.

What Did Bloom Do With The Dragon Flame?

Fate Winx Saga Bloom

Fate: The Winx Saga season 2 saw Bloom attempt to harness the Dragon Flame, with some triumphs and failures, as well as new enemies trying to use it for themselves. She and her friends attempted to use the energy source to restore Musa's powers. Bloom also begins to receive precognitive visions that are related to the Realm of Darkness. The fairy loses control of the Dragon Flame when Rosalind (Lesley Sharp, The Full Monty) tries to put her in stasis and use it for herself, consequently ending with Rosalind being incinerated. Flora later uses the Dragon Flame to release Dowling's (Eve Best, House of the Dragon) spirit from the resurrection plant by using the remnants of the Dragon Flame inside the Convergence Crystal.

Sky (Danny Griffin, The Gentlemen) is used as a hostage by Sebastian (Eanna Hardwicke, Vivarium) after his takeover of Alfea so that Bloom will put the Dragon Flame into a Convergence Crystal. He does this so that he can open a conduit to the Realm of Darkness, where a being called Shadow will then resurrect everyone who died at Aster Bell. Bloom loses control of the Dragon Flame again before she discovers that she's completely tapped out. However, her friends are able to draw enough power from Sebastian's shattered Convergence Crystal to transform. In a shock twist, it turns out that Sebastian was successful in setting up the conduit with the help of the Dragon Flame, and Bloom the changeling steps inside. Unfortunately, no one gets to see what happens from there, as Fate: The Winx Saga was canceled after season 2, and won't be receiving a third installment.

Will The Dragon Flame Be In The Winx Club Movie?

fate the winx saga cancelled

While Fate: The Winx Saga was canceled after season 2, for reasons yet to be explained by Netflix, Winx Club and Fate creator Iginio Straffi has announced that he has plans for a Winx movie that he's currently shopping around. The film in question will be a Winx Club movie, rather than a Winx Saga film. This means that most of the lore established in the live-action Netflix show will probably be retconned and the characters recast. However, the Dragon Flame and its magic was originally part of Winx Club, meaning that it will be a definite part of the feature film. A studio has yet to pick up the projected $100 million budgeted movie, as Straffi is currently shopping the idea around LA. Hopefully, Fate: The Winx Saga isn't the end of the popular franchise, as Iginio Straffi believes that a live-action blockbuster will be his magnum opus.
