Inspired by the popular Nikolodeon TV series, and featuring some nods to comic book adaptations as well, Fate: The Winx Saga is set in the fairy world of Alfea. The main protagonist is a girl named Bloom, who wields an ancient power known as the Dragon Flame. However, this mystical connection proves problematic and plays a crucial role in the Fate: The Winx Saga season 2 ending.
It has been a thousand years since the Dragon Flame was last seen. Fate: The Winx Saga finally explains this, revealing Bloom's mother was the last one to wield it a millennium ago; knowing her daughter had inherited it, she placed Bloom in magical stasis before abandoning Alfea to a mysterious dimension known as the Realm of Darkness. Bloom was brought out of stasis as a baby when the Blood Witch village of Aster Dell was attacked in modern times, and she was raised on Earth, entirely ignorant of her history and heritage. Unfortunately, Bloom's secret Winx Saga past is known only to a handful of Blood Witches who survived Aster Dell - and their leader, Sebastian, has dedicated his life to stealing the power of the Dragon Flame and resurrecting his lost loved ones. Doing so would likely destroy all Otherworld.
The stakes are higher than ever in Fate: The Winx Saga season 2, as Bloom and her friends struggle to defeat the Blood Witches. Matters are not helped by Bloom's own struggle to contain the Dragon Flame, which leaves her vulnerable to manipulation - and leads to the death of Rosalind, the manipulative headteacher of Alfea. By the Fate: The Winx Saga season 2 ending, it's unclear whether Bloom would even be acclaimed as a hero or feared as a villain.
The Realm Of Darkness Explained
The fairies of Fate: The Winx Saga may be powerful, but there are limits to the abilities of even an individual fairy. By stealing the power of multiple fairies, however, Sebastian is able to open a portal that leads to the Realm of Darkness. This appears to be a place of great danger, inhabited by monstrous beings who would be a worse threat to Alfea than even the Burned Ones seen in season 1. There are hints the Realm of Darkness may be some sort of magical underworld, because Sebastian believes he can combine the power of the Dragon Flame with the Realm of Darkness' own magic to resurrect all those who were killed at Aster Dell.
The portal to the Realm of Darkness can only be closed from the other side, forcing Bloom to step through it to save Alfea with the Dragon Flame. Visually, the design of the Realm of Darkness is clearly inspired by the Realm of the Dark Elves from the Winx Club comics. The terrain is harsh and rugged, and the only structure Bloom sees is made of pointed rock. If the Realm of Darkness is indeed influenced by the Realm of the Dark Elves, then Bloom will learn it has its own inhabitants - and they are very hostile indeed.
Is That Bloom's Mother At The End Of Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2?
Bloom has an ulterior motive for entering the Realm of Darkness, however. She has been experiencing mysterious visions of a woman living in this Realm; it's likely these visions began at the moment Sebastian opened the portal. Bloom believes these visions are of her mother, and it's certainly possible; although fairies are not immortal, her mother may well have been able to live for a millennium due to the Realm of Darkness' unique properties. She's in chains, perhaps meaning she was bait in a trap.
Bloom's story is clearly very different to the Winx Club animated series, combining ideas from the comics as well. There, the Dark Elves proved capable of erasing the memories of anyone who strayed into their realm. Assuming the woman Bloom encounters in the Realm of Darkness is indeed her mother, she may well have had all her memories of her daughter erased. The interesting question is whether Bloom's mother still wields the Dragon Flame, making her a match for Bloom, or whether it is passed on at her daughter's birth. The latter seems more likely.
Aisha, Stella, & Terra Transform & Get Their Own Wings
Fate: The Winx Saga season 2 sees three of Bloom's friends tap into their greatest power, a magic that had been thought lost - transforming into what the animated series called their "Winx forms." This follows the lore of Winx Club; the characters of Fate: The Winx Saga are limited while in human form, and must transform into winged fairies to access their abilities at a higher level. Bloom unleashed her Winx form in season 1, and her three friends do the same in season 2, with their magic overwhelming Sebastian's. It seems this transformation is only possible when a fairy invests in all their emotions, the positive and the negative, and draws them together. Bloom's presence has clearly restored teachings that had long been forgotten.
Why Musa Doesn't Want Her Magic Back
Most fairies embrace their magic, but Fate: The Winx Saga season 2 sees one, Musa, choose a different path. A mind fairy, Musa has always struggled to deal with her psychic powers, desperately wishing she could block out the thoughts of those around her. She has finally concluded the powers of a mind fairy are more of a curse than a blessing, and decides to have her magic restrained. Instead, she chooses to train with the Specialists, under Fate: The Winx Saga's Silva. Musa has already proven she's more than capable without her powers.
Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2 Ends With A New Monster
Unfortunately, the final scenes of Fate: The Winx Saga reveal a new monster has been unleashed on Alfea. This being appears to correspond to Darkar, the main villain in Winx Club season 2. Also known as the Prince of Darkness or the Shadow Phoenix, the power Darkar wields is the opposite of Bloom's Dragon Fire. It's possible he slipped through the portal from the Realm of Darkness before it was closed. Alternatively, given Darkar has always been portrayed as the polar opposite of Bloom, he may well also have naturally been transported to Alfea simply because she has entered his place of greatest power. Fate: The Winx Saga season 3 looks set to feature the most dangerous evil to date.
Every Death In Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2
The world of Fate: The Winx Saga has changed significantly since season 1, and a number of major characters have died by the end of season 2. The most prominent is, of course, Rosalind; an original character, she took over the school at Alfea and attempted to become Bloom's mentor. Rosalind's murder of Dowling was always going to be revealed sooner or later, and unfortunately for the dark fairy it was revealed at a time when Bloom was struggling to control the Dragon Flame. She died shortly after her trusted lieutenant, Andreas, who was killed because he could not be freed from the Blood Witches.
The story of Beatrix ended in tragedy as well. Often compared to Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise, Beatrix tried to play both sides against the other. She was forced to choose a side in the end, interfering in Sebastian's plan and stopping him absorbing the power of the Dragon Flame. Beatrix never truly believed she belonged, and yet her death played a key role in Stella's journey, causing grief and sorrow that helped Stella unlock her Winx form. Sebastian soon joined his victim in death, killed when Bloom, Aisha, Stella, and Terra combined their powers against him. Beatrix was buried in the graveyard, honored for her sacrifice, proving there is still the possibility of redemption in Fate: The Winx Saga.
