Paramount+ reveals the first trailer for Fatal Attraction the reboot show. 1987 saw the release of the original Fatal Attraction, an erotic thriller steeped in slasher movie vibes about a womanizing businessman becoming involved with a dangerously obsessive lover. Now Paramount+ is set to premiere a reboot of the Michael Douglas/Glenn Close original, putting a modern-day spin on the premise of a toxic man suffering the consequences of his callous actions.
It remains to be seen whether the very ‘80s Fatal Attraction can be reworked in a way that goes over with today’s audiences, but Paramount+ has offered up a first taste of the show’s efforts, dropping a new trailer previewing this miniseries reboot of an iconic film.
Unsurprisingly, the trailer focuses mostly on the two main characters, played by Joshua Jackson and Lizzy Caplan, while giving away only the barest details of the plot (which of course are already well-known thanks to the original film).
Everything We Know About The Fatal Attraction Reboot
Paramount+’s Fatal Attraction stars Jackson as Dan, a married man who enters into an affair with a colleague named Alex (Caplan). As in the 1987 original, the affair takes a bad turn when Dan attempts to end the relationship, and Alex doesn’t want to let him go. As Caplan recently explained to Grazia, the reboot puts a spin on this situation that honors what Close had in mind with her original Fatal Attraction character:
“The [original] movie still is great. It’s still scary, and makes you ask big questions, but there were two different endings and there was one ending that Glenn Close preferred, but they ended up going for another one. Glenn Close was sort of fighting to protect her character Alex’s fragile mental illness that she was dealing with. None of that was really reflected in the film.
Alongside Jackson and Caplan, the reboot show stars Amanda Peet, Alyssa Jirrels, Toby Huss, Reno Wilson and Brian Goodman. Notable names among the recurring cast include Dee Wallace and Jessica Harper.
Behind the camera, Fatal Attraction was written by Alexandra Cunningham and Kevin J. Hynes, with a “based on” credit going to James Dearden’s original Fatal Attraction script. Clearly, given the current discourse about sex scenes in movies and TV shows, not to mention the wider societal conversation about misogyny in media, Fatal Attraction is a show that will be closely scrutinized. A remake similar in tone to the 1987 original seems like a non-starter, but there are ways to make Fatal Attraction work as a story, while conveying more progressive messages than those the original film put across. Fatal Attraction hopes to not be ignored by audiences when it hits Paramount+ on April 30, 2023.
