Fast X director Louis Leterrier reveals that the upcoming sequel will feature a big cliffhanger at the end, setting up the franchise's big finale. Serving as the tenth movie in the long-running Fast & Furious franchise, Fast X sees Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto and his family facing off against Jason Momoa's new villain. The sequel is expected to be the penultimate installment for the core cast of characters, with Fast & Furious 11 set to wrap up the story in the next few years.

As the Fast X release date inches closer, Leterrier confirms in a recent interview with Empire Magazine that the upcoming film won't be wrapping up the story with a neat little bow. He teases that the sequel will end on a major cliffhanger, setting up an even more "gigantic" story in Fast & Furious 11. Leterrier's comment also seemingly confirms that he will return as director for the final installment. Check out the director's comment below:

"This one is big. You know, I don't want to oversell it, but what we're planning on the next one is just gigantic, in terms of action, scope and emotion. You will feel all the feels. Tears will roll."

Will Fast & Furious 11 Really End The Franchise?

Vin Diesel as Dom Toretto driving a car in Fast X trailer

The Fast & Furious franchise began in 2001 and has since grown in scale and scope, seeing Dom and his crew go from humble street racers to essentially world-saving superheroes. Recent installments have been somewhat hit-or-miss in terms of quality, but all have been quite successful at the box office. This box office success, especially if it continues for Fast X and Fast & Furious 11, makes it unlikely that the franchise will truly stay dormant forever.

That being said, Fast & Furious 11 will probably be the last movie for Diesel's Dom and some other members of the core crew. Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, and Jordana Brewster have all been a part of the franchise for essentially the last 20 years, meaning the end to their story has been a long time coming. While Fast X and Fast & Furious 11 will serve as the end of the road for these characters, the franchise has introduced (and will introduce) a number of new characters that could carry the franchise forward.

Nathalie Emmanuel's Ramsey seems like a likely candidate to continue the franchise, especially if paired with new female characters set to be introduced in Fast X like Brie Larson's Tess and Daniela Melchior's mystery character. John Cena, who was introduced as Jakob in F9: The Fast Saga could also possibly carry his own spinoff, in addition to Sung Kang's Han and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw, who are shown teaming up in the Fast X trailer. Although Fast & Furious 11 will be the end of the mainline franchise, the IP's value means that it is almost guaranteed to continue in the form of various spinoffs down the road.
