Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson may not be returning for Fast X as Luke Hobbs, but he's already made his mark on the franchise in the five Fast & Furious movies in which he's appeared, including the spinoff movie Hobbs & Shaw. Hobbs was all muscle and grit when began his time in the franchise as Dominic Toretto's adversary, so he quickly became acquainted with the sometimes unbelievable scenarios for which the team is famous.

When it comes to Fast & Furious, the unbelievable is usually brought on by some incredibly dumb decisions made by the main cast. Hobbs may have entered the franchise at its now midway point, but he made quick work of catching up with the others in dumb decision-making.

Flexing Out Of His Cast

Hobbs found himself in a hospital bed after Deckard Shaw set off a bomb in the DSS building at the beginning of Furious 7 and Hobbs threw himself in front of Elena to protect her from the explosion. His resulting injuries included at least a broken arm and a broken leg. That did not keep Hobbs from joining the fight at the end of the movie.

Part of that preparation included the decision to flex out of his arm cast which was not only incredibly unrealistic but also just not a good decision for someone who's only been healing from a broken arm for a few days.

Rope Slide

Hobbs and Shaw had a running time of longer than two hours, giving both Hobbs and Deckard Shaw plenty of time to show their best, worst and most entertaining qualities. While the difference between the original Hobbs and the one seen in the spinoff is drastic, the newer more developed version still fell into the role of brawn over brains.

He was always ready to jump into Bond-level action but he didn't always analyze his options which was seen when he opted to jump out a building's top-floor window with just a rope (and no glove or arm protectant) to brace his fall. Shaw instead chose an elevator free fall and while neither option was particularly safe, Shaw's route was definitely smarter. Since it was a Fast and Furious movie, Hobbs didn't sustain the injuries he surely would've received from the fall but still, he should know the first idea isn't always the best.

Taunting Brixton

A bound Hobbs couldn't hold his tongue while the Hobbs and Shaw evil villain, Brixton didn't hold back with his interrogation methods against Hobbs and Shaw.

His persistent snarky comments had Brixton continuously sending high voltage shocks into his body. Keeping humor alive is a pretty common coping mechanism but after the first time, Hobbs saw where it got him so continuing to taunt Brixton didn't display his perseverance it just brought him more pain. It was, however, consistent with his characterization in the movie.

Fist Fighting Dom

Dom fights Hobbs in Fast Five

There were a lot of dumb decisions made by the early, more egotistical version of Hobbs who was introduced in Fast 5 , the most rewatchable movie in the Fast and Furious Franchise. One of those included his fist fight with Dom. There was no reason for him to engage in a hand-to-hand altercation with Dom other than to flex his muscles and assert his perceived dominance over the team. However, it did produce one of the franchise's hardest-hitting action sequences.

Hobbs didn't even win his unnecessary fight with Dom. He could have saved a lot of time and energy if he strategically surrounded the team's safe house, which he had all the resources to do. Thankfully, that superiority complex didn't make much of an appearance in the following movies, saving him from making even more dumb and ego-driven decisions.

Falling For A Shaw

The flirtation between Hobbs and Shaw's younger sister Hattie in Hobbs and Shaw was a little strange but also understandable. Hattie was a smart and fierce fighter so Hobbs' attraction to her wasn't completely insane of a concept.

Since that was his last appearance as Hobbs, there's no way to know if they actually continued on with a relationship but the two of them together would have been a constant source of chaotic entertainment.

Pulling Guns On Dom In Brazil

Dom Toretto faces Luke Hobbs in Brazil in Fast Five

Dom and Hobbs had a few tension-filled showdowns including one orchestrated by Dom and his team to secretly place a tracker on Hobbs' convoy in Fast 5. Thinking he would finally be able to capture Dom and Brian, Hobbs had his team pull their guns on them to encourage their compliance which wasn't the best idea considering where he was.

What Hobbs may have forgotten was that he was on the streets of Brazil (which Dom was happy to loudly remind him of) and found twice as many guns turned back around on him. Still, that wasn't the last time Hobbs made the mistake of underestimating Dom.

Not Assessing His Team

Hobbs and Riley walk together in Fast & Furious 6

The first Shaw that Hobbs faced off with was the youngest brother, Owen Shaw. Hobbs teamed up with Dom and his team to catch Shaw who had a thought-to-be-dead Letty on his team, but Hobbs also had a new partner by his side, agent Riley Hicks, who was revealed to be Shaw's informant.

In Hobbs' line of work, it would be assumed that he would be thorough in assessing the people he adds to his team, which he did with Elena in Fast 5, but Riley's association with Shaw clearly slipped by in Furious 6. Obviously, since she was a secret informant, their link would have been well hidden but as a security and intelligence agency, the DSS should have the tech to uncover that kind of activity. At the very least Hobbs should have monitored the information going out from his team knowing who he was dealing with.

Underestimating Mr. Nobody's Persistence

Mr. Nobody talking to someone in Fast & Furious.

In Fate of the Furious, Hobbs found himself not only in the same prison he put Deckard Shaw in but also in the neighboring cell. Mr. Nobody offered him a way out, but Hobbs underestimated his persistence and thought that deciding to get out "the right way" would be the end of it, but of course, Mr. Nobody didn't give him much of a choice.

While it did take them longer than expected, he was right and Hobbs was delusional to think that Mr. Nobody wouldn't orchestrate a way to get what he wanted despite Hobbs' wishes.

Letting The Team Go

After the climactic Rio heist in Fast 5, Hobbs, having helped the team take the vault from Reyes to get revenge for him killing his DSS team, allows Dom, Brian, and the rest of the team to get a head start in the chase to bring them in. While he did make them leave the vault behind, he realized his mistake for underestimating the team once again when he finds the vault empty.

After Fast 5, it seems that Hobbs has no real interest in catching the team again but at that moment on the bridge, he still had every intention of catching them so letting them drive off into the sunset, even for a 24-hour head start, was not a smart decision and pretty much solidified that he would never actually be able to bring them in.

Underestimating The Team

As the DSS agent tasked to bring the team in, Hobbs made things hard for himself in Fast 5 by underestimating their abilities, labeling them as just lucky street criminals that could drive really well.

Until that movie, the Fast and Furious team did participate in mainly higher-level street crimes but their proven organization and commitment to executing their plans should have made it clear to Hobbs that there was nothing common about them. Underestimating them set him back several times, allowing the team to slip through Hobbs' fingers several times before he eventually realized their resourcefulness.
