Fast X director Louis Leterrier already knows how the long-running franchise will end. The Fast & Furious franchise, which started in 2001 with a humble movie about illegal street racers in Los Angeles stealing DVD players, is set to enter its epic endgame with Fast X. Whether there are one or two more movies, Fast X will act as the beginning of the end by introducing the franchise's most formidable villain yet – Dante (Jason Momoa), the son of Fast Five's Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes.
In a new interview with Collider ahead of Fast X's release date on May 19, Leterrier reveals that he already knows exactly how the franchise will end. The Fast X director, who is also set to direct the untitled Fast & Furious 11, teased that the franchise's ending is "both sort of satisfying and truly surprising." Read what Leterrier said below:
What I can tell you is that we know exactly where the franchise ends today. We know where we're ending. The roads we're going to take are going to be different, but we know where it all ends, and I know as a fan it's both sort of satisfying and truly surprising. As you know, fan service is tricky because you want to deliver the right thing, but you wanna surprise the people, you don't want to give them exactly what you know everybody's expecting the Fast & Furious franchise, where it's going to end up.
How The Fast & Furious Franchise Could End
The Fast & Furious franchise was previously planned to end with a two-part finale – Fast X and the untitled Fast 11. However, at the Fast X world premiere, Vin Diesel seemingly revealed that a three-part finale, and therefore Fast & Furious 12, is now in the works. Regardless of whether the franchise ends with the eleventh or twelfth movie, it seems Leterrier already knows exactly how it will end and has already begun planting the seeds in Fast X.
Since the franchise is famously about family, it has long been speculated that the Fast Saga will end will a Toretto family barbecue. This would continue a tradition for the franchise after the first Toretto barbecue occurred in 2001's The Fast and the Furious, and the convivial family gatherings served as the final scene for Fast & Furious 6, The Fate of the Furious, and F9. Whether it will be a happy or bittersweet ending remains to be seen, though Leterrier previously teased that Fast X and Fast 11 might kill off main characters.
