Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu makes his contribution to the Fast & Furious family meme with his Marvel cast. Now that Black Widow has finally been released into the world, the next movie on the MCU release schedule is Shang-Chi. The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film was originally slated to arrive earlier this year, but following Phase 4's various COVID-related delays, it moved to September. Kim's Convenience star Liu makes his MCU debut as Shang-Chi, who in the comics is known as the Master of Kung Fu.

In bringing Shang-Chi into today's MCU, the movie has made some alterations to his origin. The movie will see him bristling against the path his villainous father wants for him. In the comics, the poorly-named Fu Manchu is Shang-Chi's dad, but the film is putting a twist on that by having the Mandarin (going by Wenwu now) step into this role. Chinese icon Tony Leung plays Wenwu for Shang-Chi, which is poised to be quite the family affair. The most recent trailer for the film hinted at the hero's deep family ties.

Following the release of F9, people began to joke online about Dominic Toretto's (Vin Diesel) deep appreciation for family. Liu got in on the joke this week by sharing a photo of himself and his Shang-Chi co-stars Leung, Fala Chen, and Meng'er Zhang. They all make up Liu's onscreen family, with Chen playing his mother Jiang Li and Zhang playing his sister Xialing. Of course, Dom is there too. "I don’t need rings… I got FAMILY," Liu wrote to complete the meme. Check it out below.

Family has played a role in several MCU movies, most notably Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther. However, Shang-Chi looks to be adding an interesting layer to the idea of the bonds of family by having its titular hero try to reject his family's criminal history right from the outset. The trailers for Shang-Chi have made his feelings about his father perfectly clear, but there's still much to uncover about his sister and his mother. Hopefully more details will emerge in the lead-up to the movie's release.

For the past few months, the MCU has been focusing on characters fans already know and love. Shang-Chi will be the first new character to lead their own solo project since Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in 2019, making his arrival even more intriguing. The early looks at Shang-Chi are promising, between the thrilling action and complex family dynamics. As the movie gets ever closer, expect a lot more peeks at Shang-Chi and his family.
