Fast X, the tenth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, is currently in development, and all of the production troubles, such as director Justin Lin leaving, have led to an inflated budget of $340 million. That means that Fast X is one of the most expensive movies ever made, and it also means that it'll likely have way more cringe-worthy moments than any other F&F release too.
As fun as the street-racing-turned-action franchise is, between the melodramatic dialogue delivery, character choices, and family barbeques, the series is notoriously cheesy. But whether it's Brian's pick-up lines, bizarre street fights, or countless gear-shifting, fans wouldn't change a thing.
Shaw Is A Good Guy Now
CharlieBrown777 thinks the fact that Shaw, who was the villain in Furious 7, has become one of the franchise's biggest heroes is the cringiest part of the series. The Redditor rhetorically asks, "Like how can they have Shaw as a good guy now? Dude killed Han and didn’t even apologize for it and the gang just accepts him?"
The Fast and Furious franchise has a major redemption problem, as so many villainous characters end up getting redeemed, and Deckard Shaw is the biggest example. Not only did Shaw attempt to kill all of the Fast family, but in Furious 7, Han's death scene in Tokyo Drift was retconned, and it was revealed that Shaw was behind it the whole time. While F9 also revealed that Han survived, nobody actually knew that, and just because he survived doesn't forgive Shaw for what he did.
Brian's Dialogue In 2 Fast 2 Furious
Notothat3 doesn't point out a single one-liner or even a single scene as being cringey, but every single line of Brian O'Connor's in the 2003 sequel. The user mentions, "Not as bad as people say but Paul Walker's acting and the dialogue is at all-time cringe here. It’s really great how he went from this to being one of the more compelling actors in the later movies."
It's unfair to blame the actor when Walker had such little to work with. There are so many cringey one-liners in the Fast franchise, and most of them can be found in 2 Fast 2 Furious. And whether it's constantly calling each other "cuh" or Suki yelling "Smack that a**," it isn't just Brian who has the cringe lines either.
Johnny Tran Shooting Up Brian's Car With Uzis
Jupue87 points to a scene in the very first movie as the most cringeworthy, and it's the first time audiences meet the villain of the movie, Johnny Tran. The Redditor refers to when the motorcycle-riding Tran "deadpanned 'It's an amazing machine' before shooting up Paul Walker's car with uzis."
It doesn't exactly make sense why Johnny would shoot up the vehicle, especially as he knew that car wasn't Dom's. And what makes the scene even more cringe-worthy is it shows the same shot of the car blowing up from multiple different angles. Though Tran is one of the best Fast & Furious characters with only one appearance, he still has a goofy intro.
The Hack-Off
Codymiller_Cartoon points to the hack-off between Cipher and Ramsey as the cringiest part of the series. The Redditor comments, "The most cringey part was the 'hacker' battle between Cipher and Ramsey with the little quips about how good the other is with the technobabble."
While it seems like Cipher is Fast & Furious' very own Thanos, as she's the villain of both Fate and the Furious and F9, and she'll likely be the main villain of Fast X, it seems that, just like Shaw, she could be redeemed. Ramsey actor Nathalie Emmanuel has noted that despite the hacking rivalry, she wants to see the two characters join forces and that Cipher is Ramsey's hero. The actor added, "For years, she knew who Cipher was but didn't know the identity of Cipher. And now that she's found out who it is, there's a part of her that's going to be really impressed with that."
Kara's Altercation With Letty
Kara (Ronda Rousey) is a one-time villain in the Fast and Furious franchise, and it's the one time a villain has actually been imposing. As Kara is played by a former wrestler, her fight sequences are way more detailed and exciting than any of the others too. But one simple line of dialogue, unfortunately, reminds viewers exactly what kind of movie it is.
DrPogo2488 recalls when Kara tells Letty, "You ain't that charming, b****" in Furious 7. The Redditor adds, "I still cringe at the delivery of that line." While it was fun to see Letty go head-to-head with such a commanding villain, this line is exactly why Kara didn't resonate with Fast & Furious fans.
The Corona Appearances
EndoveProduct is sick of hearing about Corona beer in the Fast & Furious movies. The Redditor notes, "Don't get me started on that CRINGE-WORTHY beer commercial slapped in the middle of a scene. Were they even trying? They even mentioned the word 'Corona' four times."
While cringe-worthy, it's actually rather impressive and admirable that the franchise has stuck to the running gag in every release since the very first film when Dom tells Brian, "You can have any beer you want... as long as it's a Corona." Interestingly, according to Business Insider, Corona hasn't given a cent for the movies mentioning the name — but they have handed over a lot of beer.
The BBQ Scenes
In the Fast and Furious franchise, there isn't a Corona beer bottle in the picture without an eventful barbeque, and Meems012 points out just how cringey they always are. But in this case, the Redditor embraces the corniness as opposed to complaining about it.
The Redditor explains, "my fave indulgence are the bbq scenes. To FAMILY... the cheese in these scenes is what’s gonna keep me coming back for 10 and 11." The barbeque scenes are stuffed with cringiness, whether it's Jesse thanking God for exhaust systems while saying grace in The Fast and the Furious or Rome and Tej fighting for Ramsey's attention in Fate of the Furious.
Dom Causing An Earthquake
While the previous movies were full of farfetched action, Furious 7 took it to a whole other level, whether it was cars shooting from one skyscraper to another in Dubai or cars parachuting from an airplane. However, this deleted user points out what is by far the most farfetched and cringe-worthy too. The Redditor refers to when Dom stomps on the ground of a parking lot, causing it to completely crumble.
It happens following the cringiest line too, as Dom states, "The thing about street fights... the street always wins." On top of being cringey, it makes absolutely no sense too. Following that statement and then stomping on the ground, it's as if Dom predicted exactly how the parking lot would cave in on itself and that it'd perfectly split between where he and Shaw are standing.
The Quarter-Mile Race
Osholt calls out the first proper street race in the series as being cringey, pointing out "the 15 gear changes or something stupid." The scene is certainly over-the-top, the amount of gear changes is ridiculous, and to say it's a quarter-mile race, it goes on for a couple of minutes, meaning the racers would have driven several miles.
However, it's still one of the most exciting action sequences in the entire series. There are relatively few digital effects, and for the most part, it's shot from inside the cars, so it's extremely impressive that director Rob Cohen managed to get such excitement out of audiences at the time.
Everything In F9
With a long list of set pieces and action sequences, Al_rusev calls absolutely everything in F9 cringe-worthy. The Redditor comments, "Dom hooking the car to the rope and flying away from the helicopters, all the magnet bulls***, the truck at the end being flipped over and somehow maintaining momentum for another 5 minutes."
The list goes on, and that's not even mentioning going into space in a rocket-powered Pontiac Fiero. With the latest release in the franchise, director Justin Lin and the cast and crew didn't even try to ground anything in reality or plausibility, and while previous set pieces defied physics, physics simply don't exist in F9.
