Fast and Furious 9 director, Justin Lin, won’t rule out the possibility of a crossover with the Jurassic World franchise. The Fast films have grown increasingly absurd with each successive entry, and F9 looks like it could even be taking Dom Toretto’s crew into space. Two more films have already been confirmed after F9, leaving a lot of potential for even more ridiculous action sequences going forward.

Since its early days as a mild-mannered street racing story, Fast and Furious has gone to some truly ludicrous places. The past several films have seen Dom and the gang race against tanks, airplanes, drones, and submarines. They’ve jumped hypercars between skyscrapers and fought international terrorists. Multiple characters have been brought back from the dead, and the whole team has worked for the past two films as an elite covert ops squad for a secret government agency.

With so many wild storylines already having been told, it's natural for fans to wonder what the franchise could do to keep raising the bar. In a recent interview with Collider, director Justin Lin and star, Michelle Rodriguez, were asked about the possibility of a crossover with another popular Universal franchise, Jurassic World. They responded by saying that they wouldn’t rule anything out, even though it's such a wild concept. Read their full quotes below:

RODRIGUEZ: I’m all in! Once you reach a certain pinnacle, there’s nowhere to go, but to cross brand and merge. It’s what big corporations do with each other when they get too big. You just have to brand and merge with each other. The only thing standing in the way is lawyers and studios. Usually the brands that you’re trying to merge belong to different studios. But if it’s under the same umbrella, I don’t know. I’m just saying, it works.

LIN: I never say never to anything. Part of our philosophy is not to ever be boxed in or labeled. That’s all I will say.

Fast and Furious 9 Tej and Roman in space car

Rodriguez in particular seemed into the idea, or at least at the general concept of continuing to send Fast and Furious into new, absurd territory. The latest trailer for F9: The Fast Saga shows Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej (Ludacris) in what appears to be a rocket-powered flying vehicle, wearing what look like makeshift space suits. Fans have joked about the crew breaking atmosphere for years now, and it may finally be happening.

Of course, many Fast loyalists will tell you that the franchise is just as much about family as it is about cars, crimes, and going into space. F9 looks to be doing big things on that front as well, such as reuniting many of the characters from Tokyo Drift, resurrecting Han (Sung Kang), and introducing a new villain in Dom and Mia Toretto’s long-lost brother, Jakob (John Cena). Whatever insanity the franchise gets up to in the future, it will always be grounded in the chemistry of its ensemble cast. F9: The Fast Saga is scheduled for release on July 8, 2021.
