The May 2015 release of The Avengers: Age of Ultron will usher in this year’s big summer blockbuster season, but April 3rd’s Furious 7 will be the first out of the gate and hoping to repeat the early-April success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier the year before.
The final outing of Paul Walker’s character Brian O’Connor will find the franchise swapping out genres yet again, from racing actioners to heist flicks to a ‘70s-style revenge thriller, with Jason Statham stepping in as Deckard Shaw, the brother of Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), out for revenge against our returning crew of Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges and Dwayne Johnson.
There’s nothing here we haven’t seen in the other TV trailers, but this one provides the most basic sliver of plot before packaging moments from the series’ trademark ridiculous (yet undeniably fun) onslaught of crazy action set-pieces into a tight thirty seconds: action-hero scowls, cars flying through the air – and between skyscrapers – and (of course) The Rock with a mini-gun.
With at least three more Fast & Furious films in the works, Furious 7 is clearly a crucial entry. Not only will the seventh film see the first new director since Tokyo Drift as James Wan (The Conjuring) steps in for Justin Lin, Furious 7 also turns the franchise’s focus away from the heist genre and into wholly different territory. Add the retiring of the sadly departed Paul Walker’s character and we have a film upon which the future of a major franchise hinges.
While the trailers push the wild stunt-work and car-centered action, some potentially far-reaching subplots – such as the relationship between Kurt Russell’s character and Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto – have been less front and center. With more Fast & Furious movies a given at this point, how much of Furious 7 is being treated as build-up to an eighth film? Unless the film’s final trailer provides a big potential twist-in-the-making, we’ll have to wait until April to find out for sure.
Furious 7 opens in theaters on April 3rd, 2015.
