Fast X director Louis Leterrier suggests several major character deaths may be coming. The penultimate installment in the mainline Fast & Furious saga was originally going to be directed by franchise regular Justin Lin, who left one week into production due to creative differences and was replaced by Leterrier (Transporter, The Incredible Hulk) who rewrote Lin's original story. Jason Momoa joins the Fast X cast as the villainous Dante, the son of Fast Five's Hernan Reyes who is hellbent on seeking revenge against Dom and his crew for their role in his father's death.

In a new interview with Total Film (via CBR), Leterrier suggested several major characters may be coming, either in the upcoming Fast X or Fast & Furious 11, although the final film does not yet have a director or official release date. The Fast X director explained how the franchise coming to an end allowed them to raise the stakes exponentially and possibly kill off main characters, saying "Only in Westerns do cowboys gallop out into the sunset." Read what Leterrier said below:

That's the beauty of arriving near the end of this franchise: I don't have to go, 'Oh, well, these characters will live forever.' No. They might not, because it's the end. Only in Westerns do cowboys gallop out into the sunset. This is definitely different. It allowed me some freedom to raise the stakes even more than they've been raised before.

Which Fast & Furious Characters Could Be Killed Off

Jakob, Dominic, and Letty from Fast & Furious

The Fast X trailer strongly hinted at the possibility that some main characters, especially those closest to Dom, could become casualties of the war against the vengeful villain Dante. On more than one occasion, the Fast X director has made comments suggesting that no character is safe, and that this story won't necessarily have a happy ending. However, it's hard to believe that a franchise so famous for its fake-out deaths will commit to killing off a major character. With a new director at the helm, perhaps that could change.

Letty and Han are the franchise's most famous examples of characters who were seemingly killed but later returned from the dead. Gisele is a member of Dom's crew whose death has remained permanent, though even she is rumored to return in Fast X. Though Fast & Furious has retconned many of its major character deaths, the heightened stakes of the final two films mean the franchise could finally commit to a truly emotional and impactful character death. If so, the most likely candidates are Tej, Deckard Shaw, Dom's siblings – Jakob and Mia, or maybe even Dom himself.
