Fargo creator Noah Hawley is not ruling out the possibility for a season 5 of the series. Inspired by the Coen brothers’ film of the same name, FX’s Emmy-winning Fargo debuted in 2014 with Billy Bob Thorton in a leading role. The black comedy anthology series has featured some of Hollywood’s finest, including Kirsten Dunst, Colin Hanks, Red Danson, Jesse Plemons, Jean Smart, and Ewan McGregor.

Following the end of season 3, a new installment of Fargo seemed unlikely. However, FX soothed fan’s anticipation with the announcement of a season 4. Headlined by Chris Rock, Fargo season 4 has locked in pedigree talent for the cast list. Set in Kansas City, Missouri in 1950, Fargo’s newest escapade will follow two crime syndicates - one Italian and one African American - whose peace truce is wavering. Originally, Fargo season 4 was slated to premiere in April 2020, However, amid entertainment industry closures due to coronavirus concerns, season 4 was delayed. Recently, FX dropped a trailer for Fargo and announced that season 4 will release on September 27. Now, it appears more Fargo storylines could be on the horizon.

Per Deadline, Hawley reveals that he has no current plans to rule out a Fargo season 5. Speaking on the process of cooking up a fifth season, Hawley states, “It’s not just one idea you need, it’s a hundred ideas and characters, so that tends to percolate.” Furthermore, Hawley admits he wants to continue a good rapport with FX while keeping his creative integrity and continues “trying to tell stories I haven’t told before, and continue to explore with FX how we can try to reinvent that medium.”

Reportedly, Fargo season 4 will consist of 11 episodes. While it remains to be seen when - and if - a Fargo season 5 will be announced, Hawley appears to have time to sort through thoughts for a fresh setting before making official decisions. Paramount is still weighing multiple options for the next Star Trek movie, and there hasn't been much progress made on Hawley's film for the franchise. In addition to his writing and directing duties, Hawley also has plans to finish a novel.

While it appears an announcement for the potential continuation of the series is far off, there is no immediate pressure to put on Hawley since season 4 hasn’t yet debuted. Of course, Fargo remains a series that self-contains each season, but there is always the possibility of Hawley opening a path for characters to return for Fargo season 5. For now, Fargo fans have a lot to look forward to with an intriguing cast and true story set for the upcoming season.
