After an iconic film and four seasons of gruesome Midwestern crime, Fargo season 5 promises an exciting next chapter in the FX anthology show. Set in the same universe as the Coen brothers' film, each season of Fargo on FX features its own set of unique characters, with a few reappearing to tie seasons together. Though every season focuses on a different town in Midwestern America, the crimes that happen inside those towns reveal that they aren't as unrelated as they may seem. Fargo season 5 will be the most modern story in the series while continuing the trend of colorful characters, quirky dark humor, and bloody misadventures.

Fargo draws inspiration from the Coen Brothers' entire filmography with its stories of simple people who are pulled into extraordinary and dangerous circumstances. Murder, greed, and betrayal plague the people of these towns, leaving behind a trail of crime in their wake. With Fargo's previous seasons already featuring the likes of Billy Bob Thorton, Kristen Dunst, Ewan MacGregor, and Chris Rock, it is not surprising that Fargo season 5 will bring along a similarly star-studded ensemble while featuring a tale of a desperate woman on the run and the law on her tail.

Fargo Season 5 Story Details

Jon Hamm and Joe Keery in Fargo Season 5.

The Fargo season 5 story was first hinted at with the question of "When is a kidnapping not a kidnapping, and what if your wife isn't yours?" Following that intriguing tease, a more extensive story has formed. Fargo season 5 will be set in 2019 and will follow Sheriff in North Dakota Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm) who is in pursuit of Dorothy “Dot” Lyon (Juno Temple).

Though Dot was a seemingly typical housewife, she finds herself in trouble and running from the law. Also part of the pursuit is Roy's son Gator Tillman (Joe Keery) who idolizes his father yet cannot help but be a disappointment forcing Roy to turn to a drifter known as Ole Munch (Sam Spruell) for help. The plot of Fargo season 5 will also focus on Dot's family and her attempts to hide her secrets from them.

Dot's loving husband Wayne (David Rysdal) feels the need to intervene and turns to his mother, Lorraine Lyon (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who is the CEO of a major debt collection agency who puts her trusted advisor (Dave Foley) on the case. Meanwhile, other law enforcement officers are on her trail (Richa Moorjani, Lamore Morris). It is certainly a complex web of intrigue and a lot of characters intersecting in the story much like the previous seasons of Fargo.

Fargo Season 5 Trailer

Juno Temple in Fargo season 5

FX released a first-look trailer for Fargo season 5 in September 2023. While incredibly brief at only 0:42, it did give viewers their first proper look at Juno Temple's Dot Lyon, and the life she leads as a homemaker — or so it seems at first. The Fargo season 5 trailer finds Juno Temple baking and talking in her kitchen when the doorbell rings. This is when the teaser makers it clear that something strange is afoot, as Dot promptly arms herself with a handgun and baseball bat before even checking the door. While this doesn't give much away in terms of the plot it nevertheless confirms that, when it returns for season 5, Fargo will be back on its usual bizarre form.
