Ubisoft’s open world first person shooter franchise Far Cry is about to make its first foray into comics. Titled Far Cry: Rite of Passage, Dark Horse Comics and Ubisoft are giving fans a deeper look into the franchise’s infamous villains in a three issue miniseries coming this May.

Written by Brian Edward Hill, illustrated by Geraldo Borges, colored by Michael Atiyeh and lettered by Comicraft with covers by Matt Taylor, Far Cry: Rite of Passage “is a gritty tale of the intricate road that leads to the ascension of power,” and will tell “cautionary tales” of three previous villains of the franchise, namely Far Cry 3’s psycho pirate Vass Montenegro, Far Cry 4’s brutal dictator Pagan Min, and Far Cry 5’s cult leading preacher Joseph Seed.

Structured around upcoming Far Cry 6 villain Anton Castillo as he shares these stories with his son Diego to imbue a few “important lessons in leadership” on his 13th birthday, this limited series will not only explore the “undoing” of these iconic villains, but will no doubt give fans more insight as to who these people were and why they were worthy of being the Big Bads of their respective games —on top of becoming fan-favorite characters—in the first place.

In the announcement, Marie-Joelle Paquin, Product Director on Far Cry goes on to say, “Through Bryan and Geraldo’s amazing work, we’ll get a fresh look into our beloved villains’ dark pasts. We can’t wait for everyone to fall down this rabbit hole with us.” This is a tantalizing choice of words for a fan base that often loves the villains of this franchise more than the heroes they play as themselves.

But outside of the promised deep dives into the minds of these truly evil men, the series will most certainly help bring fans closer to the opening moments of the highly anticipated—yet delayed—Far Cry 6. The fact that Ubisoft and the creative team behind these stories thought it necessary to include Castillo and his son in the series at all should be a big indicator for fans that this might be more of a required reading than anything else.

Far Cry is one of the few video games series that has always deserved a comic book, and now fans can get excited about what’s in store for their favorite villains and how it all ties into the upcoming Far Cry 6. The first issue of Far Cry: Rite of Passage will be available in comic shops on May 19, 2021.
