A new story trailer for Ubisoft's Far Cry 6 explains the complex and tragic backstory of the game's villain, Anton Castillo. The upcoming installment in the open-world first-person shooter series will take place in the fictional tropical country of Yara, which Castillo rules as a fascist dictator. Yara will serve as the biggest Far Cry map ever, giving Far Cry 6 players plenty of room for intense shootouts and detailed exploration.

The Far Cry series has become well-known for its entertaining, and often morally complex, villains. Far Cry 3's Vaas, a ruthless and insane pirate leader voiced by actor Michael Mando, left a large impression on the video game community back in 2012. Far Cry 4's eccentric Pagan Min and Far Cry 5's radical preacher Joseph Seed continued this trend of beloved antagonists. Ubisoft seems committed to continuing this trend in Far Cry 6, as the antagonistic dictator Anton Castillo is being portrayed by renowned actor Giancarlo Esposito. The Breaking Bad and Mandalorian star brings a definite nuance to the role, and some fans have begun to question whether Anton Castillo is truly an evil villain.

During Gamescom 2021's Opening Night stream, Ubisoft premiered a new story trailer for Far Cry 6. The trailer largely revolves around Giancarlo Esposito's devilishly polite Anton Castillo, as the figure's moral ambiguity is brought to light. The trailer starts with Castillo being interviewed by a reporter, who mentions several parts of the dictator's dark past. Before the events of the game, Castillo was imprisoned at 13 years old, which the reporter points out is the same age as his young son. He was forced to work for 15 years pruning tobacco. However, despite his dark past and the grim deeds of the present, Castillo also reveals that he truly strives to turn Yara into a paradise, with an effective cure for cancer being researched using the country's tobacco plants.

Anton Castillo's country of Yara is breathtakingly beautiful, and Far Cry 6 players will be drawn towards exploration more than ever before. The game is set to emphasize guerrilla warfare, with the players joining a ragtag resistance in an effort to take down Yara's powerful and oppressive government. Finding and using resources in the environment will therefore be highly recommended, as players may otherwise find themselves at a disadvantage during battle. Yara's natural beauty, brought to life using modern video game hardware, will also reward exploration. With a massive and detailed map to explore and a complex villain to bring down, Far Cry 6 looks to being pushing the franchise to new heights. Ten Ubisoft studios are working on Far Cry 6 worldwide, which helps to explain the game's massive size and scope.

Far Cry 6 seems to be making good use of Giancarlo Esposito's talents, creating a villain who is as complex, entertaining and intimidating as Breaking Bad's Gus Fring. While Anton Castillo is undeniably a monster, it appears that his goals for Yara and its people may be genuinely altruistic. To learn Castillo's true intentions, players will likely have to wait until they experience Far Cry 6 for themselves.
