Ubisoft's regime-toppling, first-person shooter series is making its return this year with Far Cry 6. The upcoming title received a lot of attention for casting Giancarlo Esposito as the main villain. Esposito's character, dictator Antón Castillo, rules over the Caribbean nation of Yara, molding his son Diego, played by Coco star Anthony Gonzalez, to be the country's next leader. Although the Far Cry formula is well-established, no gameplay had been shown for Far Cry 6 until recently, alongside a release date announcement.
Far Cry 6 is launching October 7, 2021 for PC, Stadia, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. Far Cry 6 was originally supposed to be released by now, but was delayed out of Q1 2021 to give developer Ubisoft Toronto more time. It has now been three years since Far Cry 5 in 2018, though New Dawn, a direct sequel to 5, came out in 2019. Ubisoft has been alternating the Far Cry series between the more traditional mainline series and the imaginative settings of intermediate titles and DLCs since Blood Dragon followed Far Cry 3.
Far Cry 6 is the first game in the series to be developed for the new console generation, though it is still coming to the Xbox One and PS4. Though the old hardware may hold it back a bit, Far Cry 6 looks to be the most visually impressive game in the series. Ubisoft has been diligent about supporting their games across the console generations, and are offering many free next-gen upgrades, including Far Cry 6.
Far Cry 6's Caribbean Guerrilla Warfare
The Far Cry series specializes in authoritarian dictators ruling over remote locations, and Far Cry 6 will be no different. Yara is described in the Far Cry 6 gameplay preview as being deep in the heart of the Caribbean; a nation isolated after a violent revolution 50 years ago. In a story familiar to Far Cry fans, players will take control of a guerrilla fighter hoping to topple Antón Castillo's regime. The gameplay trailer leaned heavily into the guerrilla warfare aspects of the game, repeatedly mentioning how the player will be constantly outnumbered by Castillo's soldiers.
Yara provides the open world, destructive gameplay players have come to expect from the Far Cry series, and will possibly have some of the greatest diversity of landscape. From dense jungles to serene beaches and the urban density of Yara's capital city, Far Cry 6 appears to be quite varied. The prominently featured guerrilla warfare will translate into gameplay through crafting unconventional weapons and customizing combat vehicles. Players will only have to wait a few more months to get their hands on Far Cry 6 when it drops October 7.
